  4. 4 Il Fornaio

600 Pine St Ste 132, Seattle, WA (map)

Medieval-scene murals grace Il Fornaio's walls and pillars.Sprawled across Pacific Place's first two stories, this Italian-food destination provides bites for every appetite. On the Sixth Avenue level, a panetteria sends forth bread-oven aromas and offers breads as well as baked goods, sandwiches and wood-roasted coffee drinks. Turn left inside the panetteria and there's a quick-meal risotteria serving pizza, pasta, gnocchi and risotti. Ascend the staircase between the panetteria and risotteria and, on the mall's atrium level, there's a full-service, linen-wood-and-marble ristorante warmed by a fireplace. Stroll into the atrium and there's a counter-service caffe.Swarmed by eager diners since the mall opened in October 1998, Il Fornaio (a chain rapidly expanding from its Western base across the country) has yet to polish food and service. Still, there's much to admire here, especially at the risotteria, where the food achieves big-city Italian sophistication with fresh, light meals. The fine-dining restaurant upstairs honors the Italian tradition of straightforward, clean flavors but needs time and a respite from the hordes to achieve its full potential. Fresh breads, rolls and such freely dispensed Il Fornaio-label attractions as fruity olive oil and deep-flavored balsamic vinegar distinguish meals. The wine list is well chosen, but Il Fornaio's own wines (available by the glass) merit sampling. The first two weeks of each month, the ristorante offers a regional-Italian menu of bread, wine and food.Scene:
