5 to Try: Martini Bars
Updated: November 05, 2009
It used to be that a martini simply referred to the combination of gin and vermouth, a beverage made for serious drinkers (or, rather, drinkers who took themselves seriously). Now, anything served in that tell-tale glass has an "-ini" on the end--whether you take yours dirty and stirred or neon green and served in a sugar-rimmed glass, these are the top five Seattle spots to get a martini or two.

At 10 ounces each, it's no wonder the martinis at this 100-year-old bar near Seattle Center are patrons' main draw. Though they use the term "martini" rather liberally, those who stray from the traditional--with concoctions like the John Wayne Martini (with Maker's Mark, amaretto and orange), Aloe Martini (gin, aloe, lemon and lime) and the Backyard Martini (berry-infused vodka and cranberry juice)--won't be disappointed.

Marcus' Martini Heaven

Any place with "martini" right in the name ought to deliver, and this Pioneer Square bar comes through with more than 40 varieties of the drink on their menu. The subterranean location in the Seattle Underground may be best suited for tourists, but locals will appreciate the daily 4pm-7pm (until 10pm on Wednesdays) happy hour, which brings seriously discounted drinks.

Zig Zag Cafe

For classic cocktails, those in the know head to Zig Zag--the downtown venue helmed by legendary bartender Murray Stenson. He's been mixing up legit martinis and Manhattans since before many of the customers were even born, so it's no surprise that he knows what he's doing. It may be hard to pass up one of Murray's custom cocktails but, for a taste of what he's capable of, try the martini--stirred, not shaken.

Mayflower Park

This downtown hotel's bar may be one of the few places in town you can order an appletini (available here in two varieties: the Candy Apple with Skyy vodka and Sour Apple Pucker or the Red Delicious with MacNaughton whiskey, Sour Apple Pucker and cranberry juice) and not get laughed off your barstool. If sweet's not your thing, go with the Mandarine, an award-winning combo of gin, vodka, Cointreau and Mandarine Napoleon liqueur.

Von's Grand City Cafe'

Lucky for you, one of Seattle's cheapest martinis is also one of its best. For $3.50, this downtown bar (and, coincidentally, seller of roast meats) serves up a simple martini for the classicists--just gin with a splash of vermouth. Enjoy your always-cheap martini or brave whatever special they're currently offering, dictated by a Wheel of Fortune-like disc that's spun during happy hour.
