Not So Amazing. Being a designer I was really interested in bringing other creative people into the planning of my wedding reception. My husband and I had an unconventional wedding so I wanted an unconventional wedding cake, too. I approached Mike’s Amazing Cakes with an idea but kept it vague because I thought Mike might want to have room to play and bring some creativity to the mix. Wrong. Mike never met with me. He sat on the other side of a door while I talked to his assistant. She’d run back and repeat what I said (I could hear all this) and then he’d say something in response (again, I could hear!) and she’d come back and repeat it. It was so annoying. Well, we went through an hour of discussion because it turns out Mike wants to be told every single detail. Luckily I brought some photos, told them the shape of cake I wanted and exactly what decorations. I left at least satisfied that we’d have a decent cake but was a little disappointed that zero creativity came from Mike. Well, time went by and we were getting ready to leave for our destination wedding (the reception being back at home) so I called to check in and make sure everything was on track. Yes, they assured. Did they need anything before I left? No. They told me they’d check back in with me when I returned from the wedding. Well, we returned, days went by…no word from Mike. I finally contact them again to make sure everything was on track and only then was told they have lost my photos and plans and I need to tell them again what I want! Only this time Mike doesn’t want me to come back in the office again. They’d prefer an email. I was luckily able to find all the information again and provided it to them again. But I really did not have the time at this point to be spending literally hours working on this for them. Plus, I really believe if I hadn’t contacted them repeatedly we probably would not have received a cake for our reception. Further, I no longer had any confidence this was going to be anything close to “amazing”. And I was right. It was the bare minimum of what I asked for and adequately completed but not well done. I didn’t set a tight budget, this was really important to me. But it was skimpy in some respects. For example, I specifically asked for a cascade of white chocolate shells down the side. I received a trail of shells, one wide like stepping stones, down the side. It was stupid looking and I’m sure they knew that was not a cascade. I don’t think anyone at Mike’s Amazing Cakes cared about my order and ordering my cake from them is honestly one of the only regrets I have about my wedding reception. Find someone who really cares and brings something to the table and you’ll be much more amazed, I’m sure.
Is it a book? Is it a cake?. We were married on 1/1/09, and Mike's did our cake. Since my husband and I met online, discussing books, we asked Mike to make a cake that looked like a giant fairytale volume lying open on the table, with an inkpot and quill on top. What he created was a cake that some of our guests actually thought was a book. People were totally over the moon about this cake. Of all the little details we planned for the wedding, the cake reaped the most compliments. Or, at least, it was neck-and-neck with the bride! We chose a lemon cake with raspberry buttercream, and not only was the cake stunning, it was absolutely delicious. Their buttercream is to die for. You won't be disappointed if you go with Mike's!
Out of this world!.
I cannot say enough about how wonderful the people at Mike's Amazing Cakes are! I planned my wedding from across the country, which meant ordering my cake over the phone. I exchanged a lot of emails with them, and they came up with the perfect design. They let me have my parents come and taste cake so that they could advise me.
When my wedding day came, the cake was everything I dreamed of! And even more delicious than my mom and dad said it was!
Thank you to everyone at Mike's Amazing Cakes!
Strongly recommend.
My daughter and her new husband really wanted to get their wedding cake at Mike' Amazing Cakes. When we all went to sample the cake and talk about prices, I was very suprised to hear the prices. I was sure that the prices would be high, considering his notoriety. The price we were quoted was considerably less than other area bakeries.
When the cake was delivered, it was exactly what my daughter had hoped for, and I heard many comments from guests who enjoyed the delicious cake.
Very disappointed with their service and product. The cakes on the site are impressive, they truly have made some amazing cakes. Just don't count on them to make yours just as amazing. We ordered a wedding cake with stained glass pattern on all tiers, top and sides. When the cake showed up (a little late, although 520 traffic was exceptionally bad), it only had a stained glass pattern wrapped around the side of the middle tier, and sticking up half an inch from the tier like a rail. Nothing on the other tiers or the top of the middle tier. They were wholly unapologetic about the delivery time and dismissive of our strong opinions regarding the quality of the cake. We paid over 300 dollars for this half baked turkey, although it did taste okay. Judging from the positive reviews and great cake designs, it might be worth it to take a chance on Mike's. But buyer beware! You truly are taking a chance.
Found service to be rude and combative.. I called a month in advance to order a cake for my mothers 80th birthday. No one answered the phone so went to their website to start the order process. After four days of emailing, I left a message for Theresa to call me back to place the order. I had ordered two cakes before so I knew I liked their cakes. For the next week, I called several times each day trying to get someone one to answer the phone to place my order. Finally, a week after my message and 11 days after I had started this process (and still 2 1/2 weeks from my event) I get Theresa on the phone. When I tell Theresa the day of my event, she rudely tells me Mikes?s cannot not book anymore cakes for that day. Even when I explain that I had been in contact with her by email and left a message. She responded by telling me, "I return all messages that are left and if you had left a message, I would have called you back, and besides (she says), we were booked up for that date a week and a half ago anyway". I found her to be rude and combative. No please, no thank you for calling, no sorry we can't fill your order. I felt like my business was not wanted or needed.
Long wait for consultation, but worth it.
The only negative thing I can say is that the wait to actually sit down and talk to someone about a cake is too long. We waited about 5 weeks from the time we booked it until the actual appointment. However, they don't charge a fee for a consultation or tasting, unlike other bakeries.
If you have to wait, ask them what days they have public tastings. We were able to go and taste a bunch of flavors before we had our appointment.
At our appointment, we were offered two flavors (no choices). The woman looked at our picture and quoted us a much lower price than the other place we'd gone to. All in all, it was totally worth the wait.
I don't know how they do it!. This place is awesome. We had a rough idea for our cake, but it was a kind of strange idea. We were sure they would laugh at us. When we met with the lady at our appointment, she was really nice. She took our wacky idea and showed it to Mike. The cake ended up so much better than we imagined. The best part was that it was way less expensive than we thought it might be! Mike and crew do an amazing job!
Brings imagination to life.
My daughter's birthday cake was spectacular! The employee was so helpful when we met. She helped me bring my idea to life and the cake eneded up even more beautiful than I imagned. The bonus was that it was delilcious, too!
Thanks, Mike! Keep up the amazing work!
Beautiful! Delicious! Affordable!.
I chose Mike's Amazing cakes to make my wedding cake. I visited several other bakeries and was surprised to find that not only was Mike's cake delicious, it was the least expensive! I wanted a very simple dot pattern, and was able to get it at Mike's for less than what other places were charging for their cakes with no pattern.
My only negative is that you have to wait a while to get an appointment. But the good thing is that they have an open house once a month or more, and we were able to go to one and try eight different kinds of cake. We had 2 more flavors at our appointment. They also let me pick up samples to take home another week so that we could try the flavor that we wanted.
