What Our Expert Scouts Say

World Spice Merchants

Fennel pollen, piment d'esplette and dukkah are some of my favorite products at this market institution. Most of the staff have culinary backgrounds so they carry exceptional housemade spice blends and can offer great guidance should you have questions.

Great selection of high quality spices. Often referenced by local chefs and cooking instructors as a great source. They also sometimes offer cooking demos w/their products.

Great Spices - Rude/Snotty owner. If you can get past the absolute rude arrogance and snotty attitude of the owner, Tony Hill, then you are in for a wonderful experience and variety of herbs and spices. Since Mr. Hill was raised in Arkansas, you would think he would have genteel Southern manners, but unfortunately that is not the case. If however, you can go on a day the owner is not there, you will have a wonderful experience for the senses of sight and smell. Once you try the spices from World Spice Merchants, you will have a very hard time going back to the grocery store spices.

Forget Spice Islands--scoop up one of 200 freshly harvested herbs, spices and teas from growers around the globe.. In Short
"We scour the world to find things that wouldn't make it into mainstream culinary America," says owner Tony Hill, a chatty, friendly man passionate about spices. He or his staff will gladly hold forth on the differences and subtleties of flavors in this airy emporium filled with jars of colorful spices . All teas sold here are pure varieties, but the staff will mix blends, just as they do with spices and herbs.

Fabulous, sensory experience. I love this place! The fact that they will grind fresh spice blends on the spot tells you they aren't afraid to show you what's going into what they sell. Sure the stuff they sell is more expensive than your run of the mill supermarket spice jar, but you get what you pay for. I especially recommend their Mayan drinking chocolate, pearl jasmine tea, 'zahtar', and kashmiri garam masala.

The selection of teas and spices is wonderful AND the prices are great. If you are ever tempted to buy your spices at the supermarket, stop yourself now and go to World Merchants!!!!
