I went for happy hour after work. Sure you do not always get the same quality of food at happy hour, but then again, all restaurants should serve at least decent food all the time to entice the people to come back. Charlie's certainly did not entice me to come back.
I had the Cajun Chicken Strips. They were served cold and tasted like something dumped out of a Costco frozen food bag. I had the chicken quasadilla; not any better than my average chef skills whip up in the kitchen each day. The french fries were soggy.
Nonetheless, the happy hour prices were good but I have to say the only time I would recommend this place is at 2AM after you go out drinking and everything you eat tastes good.
Charlie's is still a great place!.
Reading other reviews, I had to stick up for this Broadway staple. I agree that sometimes it's an off night there with a rowdy crowd, a too-bored waiter or some other mishap but overall, I've found the food to be consistantly good (some of the best Monte Christo sandwichs, fish and chips, fried mozzerella, hot fudge sundaes in town) and the waitstaff is almost always friendly and attentive.
In the bar, Happy hour deals are great although the back room (as expected) is highly smoke-filled. The drinks (ask for the call liquor) are strong and keep coming and the happy hour menu food is really outstanding (tempura veggies and fried cheese are amazing)
While I wouldn't say this place hasn't seen better days with it's decor, I would always recommend it as a great place for brunch, happy hour drinks, dinner or a late night snack.
Charlie's is a Hit and Miss Place. I have been going to Charlie's since '92. Back then it was a much better. There are only a handful of items on the menu worth eating and the prices are unwarranted for what you get. Every time I order something new I have also been disappointed. The blackened chicken fettuccini is still the best-but I have to remind them to bring me the roll that comes with it every time. The service can be great and but more often is discourteous or slow especially in the afternoon. The last time I talked to the manager about it because the service so was bad, they screwed up the bill, it took 1/2 an hr to straighten out and the quality of the meal bad. I dont want to down play the place since as it is much better that others on the hill. Just dont expect too much.
Great Breakfast. I have only been to Charlie's once for breakfast but I plan to return. My omelette was delicious and it would be impossible to receive better service.
We Keep Going Back. When my husband craves a Reuben Sandwich, we head to Capitol Hill. He swears it's the best! Real corned beef instead of pastrami like you sometimes see at other places. Food is on the greasy side that's true, so you wouldn't want it as a regular meal. We've never had bad service but we always sit in the bar - maybe that's the difference?
The Worst Of the Worst. The fact that Charlie's on Brodway is still open is a miracle to me ! The food is greasey and bland. The waitstaff unhelpful and offer little to your dining experience. The amtmosphere is awful drab , dreary and resembles a brothel ! The air is so full of smoke you smell like an ash tray when you leave. I will not be back. I don't think my gag reflex could handle another DISGUSTING dinner at Charlie's! Do yours a favor and go to IHOP!
Not Good. The one and only time that ate dinner at Charlie's was one time too many. I ordered the steak which was a tough as a shoe and as bland as tap water. The service was fine and the atmoshere was charming, but the food is terrible. After hearing so many people rave about this restaurant I can only assume that they were high and didn't care what they were putting in their mouths! Too bad a restaurant can't survive on atmoshpere and service alone!
Great Place!.
My family and I have been going to Charlie's on Broadway every other Sunday for years. Now that I've moved to England, we make sure we eat there every time I come home for visits. They have excellent food, and the breakfasts are fab! My 6 year old loves the fish-n-chips and it's difficult not to eat off his plate... it's so good. The service is very good as well. Even though we're a large group (8-10), they always have served us quickly and checked back frequently enough. Don't believe anyone who hates this restuarant...they were probably too drunk to taste anything!

what horrid food. Sure is a cheap place to eat but you're better off eating at IHOP. On our latest visit, I had the seafood pasta- it was so bland that I had to add tons of salt and pepper to make it resemble something other than a pile of noodles in a pool of grease. My companion had the steak which was hard and crusty. The service is consistently bad, but when you go with a large group, it gets even worse. The only bright spot is that they serve until late at night and that they are not 13 coins.
Home on Broadway.. Going to Charlie's is like going home, for folks who hang out on Broadway. A good place to be comfortable. Food: standard fare, predictable, could be less greasy; more options for vegetarians and lowcarbers would be appreciated. Atmosphere: comfy; better system for getting rid of smoke would be good. Service: very tolerant. :) My gang of friends can be overwhelming, and they treat us really well. Reservations recommended.
