Editorial Review for Glo's – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
This tiny pie-wedge of a coffee shop buzzes with energy, from the open kitchen to the colorful crowd waiting outside. It's comfortable enough to please the grandparents, but quite popular with the diverse residents of Capitol Hill. Service is friendly, if occasionally harried.

The Food
Greasy-spoon purists should keep an open mind--all the diner classics are here, but with some welcome twists. Corned beef hash and eggs isn't the standard mesh--instead, chunks of fresh-cut corned beef and potatoes are mixed in a spicy tomato sauce. A homemade touch punches up waffles and pancake specials like the buckwheat with apple-rhubarb compote. Eggs are perfectly poached for the Benedict and slathered in a light, lemony hollandaise. Lunch standards get special treatment as well--the turkey sandwich dresses the fresh-roasted meat with cream cheese and cranberry sauce. Even the basic BLT scores high with fresh bread, crisp bacon and flavorful Dijon mayo.

Gone are the days when Glo herself sashayed past your table to refill your coffee and make a tart remark, when it was worth waiting outside, even in bad weather, for an hour or more for a table in this tiny restaurant that has a well-deserved reputation for pretty good food. Nowadays, you wait an hour in bad weather to be called in to seat yourself at an available table and promptly and consistently ignored. If you get a coffee refill within half an hour, count yourself lucky. If the waitress (a bored, distracted slacker looking the worse for wear from the night before, who spends most of her time making inane small talk with her coworkers) takes your order within the next half hour, give yourself a pat on the back. If you get your food within the next half hour to forty-five minutes, eat quickly, because that will signal to someone—anyone?—that you might actually need something: a refill on your coffee or water, the check, or maybe even something else to eat or drink. Who knows? They don't, because they don't care. What a dreadful place Glo's has become. The help is deplorable, even if the food has remained acceptable (that is, if you ever even get it; there have been tales of patrons never receiving their orders). Whoever owns this place should take notice, especially as it's far from the only breakfast on the Hill, to say nothing of town. What I say to the ownership is: Fire your staff and replace them with people who care. Otherwise, I and my discerning friends, whose self-esteem is intact, won't eat there ever again.

Pros: Decent food

Cons: Awful service

Glo's is one of the best places for breakfast/brunch in town. They freshly squeeze the orange juice. They do take the time to make your meal the right way. The short, brunette waitress is awesome, and remembers you. My boyfriend and I have been going here for over 2 years, when we moved about 2 blocks away. They NEVER had an issue with to-go orders, even happily chopping up my boyfriend's side of sausage. I took my mom and my aunt here for a late breakfast one day, and they LOVED it, asking every time they're in town if we can go to Glo's. Mom and Dad have gone there with me and my boyfriend on a few occasions, and have always been treated very well. I always have the eggs blackstone, which is amazing, and I've tried to replicate it at other places when I can't have Glo's. If you arrive before 1pm, yeah, you're going to wait, because it's that good. But if you can't understand that, and get all butt hurt that the waitress doesn't immediately pounce on you because, heaven forbid, she might actually think you'd like a few minutes with the menu and to relax and chitchat with your companions, or, even more unheard of, that she might actually be BUSY, then move along. More coffee and o.j. for me, and others like me who love Glo's!

Pros: Coffee and a constant supply of cream and sugar while you wait, fresh o.j., delicious food, great staff

Cons: No parking, long wait before 1pm, self-serving hipsters that take up tables ahead of you.
