A garden getaway on the edge of the city's bohemian district..
The Scene
This restored, turn-of-the-century, Pacific Northwest-style retreat is a block away from the funky shopping, dining and entertainment district of Capitol Hill. Located on a quiet street near a bookstore for travelers and an art-house theaters, it blends in so well with the neighborhood that it's hard to tell that it's a hotel. It doesn't have a sign, so have the address before you go.
The Details
Guests will be delighted by the original stained-glass windows, oriental rugs and hardwood floors, as well as private bathrooms. Although visitors may not see the artist at work, they can watch the paintings of proprietor Russel Lyons evolve now that he's moved his easel into the common room. Meanwhile, they can play the grand piano. In summer, breakfast is served on a deck overlooking the garden. With its central location, this is an ideal place for travelers wanting to avoid the generic hotel experience.
