Varsity Inn
Taco Omelette - Something Special.
I have to agree with the person that said the Varsity reminded them of the diner from Seinfeld, that's a very appropriate description of the decor. I live within walking distance from this place, and I'm not sure I would frequent it if I didn't. It's pretty standard greasy-spoon diner grub, with some Mexican twists (I think the owners are from Mexico?). I always get the Taco Omelette, which is ground beef, cheddar, grilled onions, salsa roja, and sour cream. It is a hungover man's dream, but I would never go there on a normal appetite. It's also a little over-priced ($9 for a denver omelette), however, I've probably brought 10 out-of-towners there at different times, and no one has complained once (probably because they were always hungover when we went there).
Please do not, under any circumstances, order the Juevos Rancheros - they are a bland watery mess that cost $10.
Sigh - yet another breakfast mistake. Seattle clearly lacks for good breakfast joints and the Varsity is no exception. For starters, that is NOT Heinz ketchup in those bottles. Maybe I am asking too much, but when I cover my hash browns in ketchup only to find out it is some other too-sweet, extra-thin, funky brand - that irritates me. Service is ok - but I don't expect much at a place like this. Sometimes you seat yourself, sometimes they seat you depends. They clearly play favorites with regulars in terms of seating. Biscuits & gravy were disappointing small biscuits and flavorless gravy. Omelettes either lack cheese or dont have enough beware! Never had any problems with the pancakes or bacon. One caveat you cant order sandwiches during breakfast hours so no BLT for breakfast on the weekends. Boo! Again, itll work in a pinch, but its nothing to write home about.
