Editorial Review for Al's Tavern – by Paul Fontana
The Scene
The room itself, the long bar, booths, tables and pool tables--Al's is almost exclusively rectangular; about the only curves on display here belong to the customers and beer bottles. Both physically and philosophically, it's a study in the basics. A change in ownership in the late '90s brought in a younger, hipper clientele, but little else was changed in this classic beer joint (save for the addition of entertainment options like Galaga and Guns n' Roses pinball).
The Draw
A neon sign in the front window reads "Cold Beer," which is about all you're going to get here. Wine is available, but nearly invisible. The lack of pretension and the fixtures give the place a timeless appeal; when Patsy Cline's playing on the jukebox, it's easy to pretend that it's 1962.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe sign in the front window simply states "Smoking," something that isn't just tolerated here, but encouraged.

This is one of my best dive bars in wallingford. Cheap beers only and 2 pool tables. But with a name like ALS !! how can you lose.
Pros: cheap beer, pool
Cons: dirt
