Editorial Review for Essenza – by Marika McElroy
The Scene
This airy Fremont store owes its distinctly European look to owners Jim and Becky Buford, who built it as a beauty products-oriented counterpart to Les Amis. Jim designed the place, from the elaborate iron jewelry cases to the rakishly conceived counter. The stone fountain in the center of the store burbles country French elegance. The products are all European or Euro-inspired (read: pure and not perfumy).
The Goods
Delicate bath products, precious baby clothes and dainty loungewear all flaunt an unmistakable French accent here. Peruse products from L'Occitane, E. Coudray Paris and the Fresh cosmetics line, otherwise available only at Barneys (check out the hazelnut clove wrapped in lizard-skin paper and tied with a copper filigree). Though some items are sinfully indulgent ($72 for a pair of slippers), others are downright reasonable ($7 for Fresh soaps).

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoGifts for girls are a cinch here. Gift-wrapping is always free; better still, it looks expensive.

I have shopped at Essenza over the years and it is one of my favorite shops in Seattle. The staff is friendly and helpful but they don’t hover — even when you lather yourself with the samples of lotions and perfumes. The fragrances are heavenly. The “lavish yourself in silk and satin” sleepwear is also heavenly. Plus, I have often bought cosmetics there since they have very high quality skincare and makeup products by manufactureres such as “Fresh” who make two creamy lipstick colors I adore. Best of all, it’s one of my favorite places to buy gifts since the gift wrapping is so lovely. I highly recommend Essenza as a destination shop.
Pros: Great products, great service, unique items
Cons: Not inexpensive
