Editorial Review for Renaissance Madison Hotel – by Gayot.com

The Scene
Because this full-service hotel sits on the southernmost edge of downtown, it is often overlooked. But its reliable service and array of standard amenities make it a solid choice for conventioneers and business travelers.

The Details
There isn't much that is distinctive about the exterior of this big grey building, and all of the 553 guest rooms are essentially the same. But the views from the exercise room and pool area can't be beat. Look out at the Cascade Mountains and Capitol Hill while working out or gaze onto the Port of Seattle and much of downtown while swimming in the small pool. A soak in the sauna is accompanied by views of Safeco Field and the Seahawks Stadium. The notable fitness room has a Brazilian cherry wood floor made of wood leftover from the construction of the deck at the mega-mansion of Microsoft bigwig Bill Gates.

Fopr the Marriott Family of hotels, this was incredibly dissapointing. The exterior has dirt drip lines down the sides and it is an UGLY reflection on what you would expect coming to a Marriott brand hotel. Upon entering the lobby, it looks a bit nicer but is not warm at all, outdated, and an all around disapointment matched by the exterior. the rooms are old, the food barely adequate, the bar common, the facilities are rinky dink, the meeting space sporadic and used and the hotel seems to be completely mis-managed. Wait staff in the restaurant was very cordial, but the rest of the staff was either distant or offered a very contrived greeting. Not sincere at all.

We were planning to stay on Bainbridge Island after a day of shopping in Seattle, but upon finding all the places we wanted to stay booked we decided to make a reservation where our friends were staying. I wasn't sure if it would be as fun or as romantic as Bainbridge -- I thought it would be your standard corporate downtown hotel -- but I was more than impressed. After a long day of shopping we were both ready to rest before meeting friends for dinner, so when we arrived at the hotel I was just hoping for a warm shower and a somewhat comfortable bed. Little did I know my boyfriend had made the reservation for the Romance Package. Our room was great, a corner room on the 20th floor with a comfortable sitting room as well as the bedroom (which had amazing views of the downtown buildings, the Bay and the Space Needle). The service was beyond expectation. As part of the package we were to get champagne and chocolates, which we forgot to order before we took a walk before dinner. When we arrived back to the room to freshen up, the treats had been delivered!! It was a great surprise. The package also included breakfast in the restaurant or a limited menu from room service. We chose the room service option, and it was absolutely wonderful -- they called before it was delivered to verify exactly what we wanted and it was much more than I could ever eat for breakfast! Overall, I would absolutely reccommend the Renaissance for a weekend stay in Seattle -- and get the Romance Package for an even sweeter stay. As for drawbacks, there weren't many. No mini-fridge or coffeemaker in our room (or our friends' room) -- but they do offer free coffee service in the morning. The furnishings are a bit dated, but not bad (get new shower curtains!). We wanted to use the pool/spa that night, but there were holiday parties in the hotel (with some of those guests staying over) so it was too crowded and loud, even at 10:45 p.m. We had a wonderful stay! Thank you!

Pros: Service, Food, View

Cons: Dated furnishings, Parking
