Editorial Review for Mix Ice Cream Bar – by Andrea Burtness

The Scene
On warm evenings, lines run the length of this long, narrow University District sweet shop and seating is extremely limited. Friendly employees stand in front of marble slabs where they mix and mash everything from Gummi Bears to graham crackers (called "mix-ins") into the desired flavor of ice cream to create made-to-order treats.

The Food
The five flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt--chocolate, vanilla, sweet cream, cheesecake and espresso--are all made in-house. A blackboard behind the counter prescribes suggested combinations, including which mix-ins go best with each flavor. Try a waffle cone with strawberry cheesecake (cheesecake ice cream, graham crackers and strawberries) or, for a real caffeine high, a cup with Jet City Buzz--espresso ice cream and a shot of espresso.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Employees can sometimes be a tad too generous with mix-ins. If you don't want to be eating a little ice cream with your coconut, make sure to request they go easy on ingredients.

When to Go

If your ice-cream craving hits on a warm night, your best bet is to get a scoop at the Green Lake location, where outdoor seating is available.

The MIX locations are both closed - out of business. Greenlake location at north end of the lake, near World Wraps, is being replaced by a Ben & Jerry's (FYI)

Pros: used to be good

Cons: they went out of business

The mix is pretty good. I like their ice cream better than their milkshakes. The lines are almost always long and there's limited seating, especially weekend nights. The atmosphere is so so. The staff is very nice. Overall, I think the mix is very, very good.

Pros: great ice cream, fun to have diff. things mixed into ice cream

Cons: long lines, limited seating
