Continental Pastry Shop

Specializing in fine Greek cuisine

  • Authentic Greek cuisine
  • Since 1967
  • Family owned and operated

The Continental Pastry Shope and Greek Restaurant is known for both the dishes it serves, as well as the pastries baked on the premises. Almond baklava, walnut baklava, kataifi, galactoboureko, and revani are all made on a daily basis. During the holiday season, George will come in early to bake specialty pastries and breads to be featured for a limited time. George insists that only top quality ingredients are used for his pastries, and will grind his own almonds to achieve the consistency he demands to make the perfect Revani or Copenhagen.

The Continental is open every day, and offers a blend of continental and Greek cuisine. The Lagoses offer catering services for any size gathering or event, and have the largest selection of Greek wines in the Pacific Northwest to accompany any menu. The Continental also has Greek groceries available, such as Grek cheeses and wines.

Editorial Review for Continental Pastry Shop – by Hannah Levin

The Scene
Simple, friendly and airy, this U-District institution has the affable atmosphere of a Greek cafe, with owners George and Helen Lagos and son, Demetre, doting on regulars like family. Save for a few vibrant photos of Greece hanging on the walls, decor is unfussy and utilitarian. Weekdays, students and professors fill the linoleum-tiled dining room with animated conversation, while weekends bring out large groups for brunch with the kids.

The Food
The Lagos took over in 1974. Quality and consistency remain hallmarks. Breakfast (served all day) comes with eggs, golden, oregano-flecked Greek fries and souvlaki, bacon or sausage. Or try Greek standards like lentil-lemon chicken soup, dolmas or gyro sandwiches on freshly baked rolls. Specials usually include some variation of chicken in lemon, garlic and olive oil, as well as a fresh seafood option. Authentic ingredients, homemade baklava and Greek wines are available in the deli.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

You'll get great service anywhere, but large groups are usually more comfortable on the left side of the dining room, while solitary diners will find cozier spots on the right side.

What to Drink

It's not on the menu, but ask for Helen's spritzer--a refreshing blend of fresh orange juice and sparking water.

The Extras

Don't be alarmed if you hear someone speaking German, Italian or French--foreign language speakers meet nightly at the restaurant.

The Continental is a great family-run Seattle institution. They have all the standard dishes one would typically expect from a Greek restaurant, and they are all up to snuff. A great place to go for lunch if you are in the U-District (especially if you have a little time to leisurely enjoy some baklava and Greek coffee after your meal) or even better to go with your family for dinner. They also have a selection of Greek wine and groceries for those who want to bring something home.

my friends and i always come to this place. it's so delicious! the service is always wonderful, and the ambience really does make me feel like i'm in some cafe in greece. the salads, entrees, and wines are great, but their desserts strike people as odd and maybe evne anti climatic until they realize that it's also a bakery. nevertheless, i always go there whenever i'm up in the university district.. and even when i'm not, i make the 20 mile drive to eat at this place!

Pros: great food, service, value

Cons: street parking, crowded during 'student hours'
