Editorial Review for Gargoyles Statuary – by Lisa Wogan

The Scene
The Ave has always been a little otherworldly--Goth teens lurking in Barnabas Collins capes and bus stops tagged with hieroglyphic graffiti. So it's a fitting home for this shop-cum-cave, stocked as it is with the stony faces of ghouls and sprites, burbling waterfalls, candles and mists, not of Avalon, but joss sticks. Here, in semi-darkness, students of the occult rub shoulders with homeowners in search of a clever gremlin for the mantelpiece and Eastside matrons who braved bridge traffic for an in-house Tarot card reading.

The Goods
All variety of indoor and outdoor statues, cornices and candlesticks, including an eerie winged creature slurping from a skull, several versions of the cuddly Dedo of Notre Dame fame and homunculi put to mundane tasks such as gargoyle card holders. Rosaries, runes, articulated rings, fantasy art by Amy Brown and Ouija board paintings by Kipling West round out this garden of stony delights.

Insider Tips

When to Go

To commemorate a store fire in 1994, merchandise (some of it deliberately burned for the event) is marked down between 10 and 75 percent every Valentine's Day.

The Extras

Mandala Books, just a few blocks north, is another star in The Ave's constellation of mind expansion, conspiracy, divination and religion.

This shop is worth a trip to the U District (OK, I live in the neighborhood). The store is packed to the rafters with unique, fascinating, slightly creepy merchandise. For some reason, I assumed the owner of the place would be aloof, but she is friendly and darling. Please support this business!

Pros: Unique, interesting merchandise; owner is very pleasant.

Cons: none
