Editorial Review for Dish – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
Loyal regulars sign their name on the wait list hanging outside, help themselves to a cup of coffee and wait their turn. Tables and chairs are worn and mismatched, and servers are conversational in a charming way. After a few visits, everyone feels like a regular, right down to the nickname of "honey." Kids and well-behaved dogs are welcome.

The Food
Breakfast is where it's at: A counter seat is often the best in the house, offering a view of the busy cooks and hot griddle. Besides traditional eggs and potatoes, favorites include homemade corned-beef hash, hearty scrambles and steaming pancakes (the thick syrup-sponging variety). Kids will love the mouse face-shaped pancakes decorated with blueberry "eyes" and other fruity features. Nothing is fancy, but most items are just right.

Insider Tips

When to Go

The biscuits and gravy is a stick-to-the-ribs specialty, but sometimes runs out by mid-morning. Get there early to avoid disappointment.

Know Before You Go

It's popular seven days a week, and the weekends are crazy. It's worth the wait, but make sure to bring a newspaper and a healthy sense of anticipation. Coffee is served to the crowds outside.

Look Good

We loved it!!! We are down in Tacoma and don't get up to Ballard orFremont much. But when we do, we eat at The Dish! My husband and I had been working in the are and noticed a line outside the small cafe. We thlought they must have good food! WE MADE A WEEKEND TRIP UP JUST TO TRY THE DISH. My husband is a contisure of Greasy Spoon Cafes. We loved it. I had an Omelet with Dried tomatoes and spinish in it. It was delisious. We sat up to the counter, the place was packed. We have since found our own Special Greasy Spoon, called Marcias Silver Spoon. It's in Tacoma off S. Tacoma Way and Pine St. The atmospher is like the Dish. And the food is delisious also.

Pros: Community seating.

Cons: Crowed

Our whole family loved it! It was a bit of a wait on a Saturday morning for our kids, but the chairs and coffee outside made for a nice pre-breakfast conversation spot. There are even treats and water bowls if you bring Fido along. The food was definitely worth the wait! They had all the expected, but with a flair that was a great surprise. And the kids' pancake is a blast! T hanks!

Pros: Awesome food!

Cons: A bit of a wait, but that's a good sign, right? And worth the wait!
