Le Gourmand

Food for one who is fond of delicate fare

  • Organic local ingredients
  • French food and wines
  • Cozy, romantic setting

Le Gourmand is a gastronomical pleasure. Chef-Owners Bruce and Sara Naftaly craft organic Northwest ingredients into artful fare. We use local suppliers for our organic ingredients. Our menu items are quite flexible, so ask for substitutions, if necessary.

We also host private parties. Our extensive wine list includes French wines and local favorites.

Menu Highlights

Smooth savory pate of rabbit livers flavored with cognac, port and thyme

Blintzes filled wtih Sally Jackson's Sheep's Milk Cheese with chive butter sauce

King salmon fillet poached with a sauce of champagne, halibut stock, crème fraiche, fresh Sorrel and wind-dried salmon

Boeuf a la ficelle: Organically raised beef tenderloin steak simmered in stock, served with a cabernet pressings sauce, homemade mustard and marrow

Crème brulee with homemade brandied raspberries, chocolate and kirsch mousse

Editorial Review for Le Gourmand – by Allison Austin

The Scene
Master Chef Bruce Naftaly's labor of love has proven enduringly timeless: Since 1985, this tidy French restaurant's unassuming sweetness, expert service and divine culinary precision have held diners captive. Delicate wall murals create a wonderfully light feeling that belies the building's slightly forbidding exterior.

The Food
Naftaly's fastidious use of local, seasonal produce translates into a touch of revelation within each dish: A twinge of basil in the peach sauce adorning the young rabbit loin; local Merlot pressings that urge the beef tenderloin sauce to greater depths. Appetizers are just as ambitious--especially the smooth rabbit-liver pate or the sole-and-shrimp mousseline. Despite the considerable fuss, Naftaly's art comes across as down-to-earth and approachable.

The Extras

Pastry Chef Sara Naftaly's desserts are among the best in the city. The tart, homemade lemon ice cream is particularly excellent, as is the creme brulee, with a burnt crust that tastes like toasted marshmallows.

What to Drink

Naftaly keeps the wine safely in the $30-$40 range, with several bargains among them.

I was in a party of 6 and we had a terrible dining experience. The host/food server was terribly slow at best. The food was bland and the atmosphere was dismal. A large party near our table was also loud and pretty much overruling the entire restaurant's atmosphere. Food was decent, but not as excellent as I had hoped. It did not live up to all the hype. Our party is in agreement that your money is better spent elsewhere.

Pros: Modern decor, White interior, Cool restroom

Cons: Subpar cuisine, almost laughable.

Food was mediocre. I was with a friend for dinner and service was extremely slow and terrible. We noticed that there was preferential treatment for return guests, but there was no such engagement with new guests. I think you have to be in a "club" to be served well here. The terrible service did not add to the flavor of the foods. Do not even consider going to this restaurant.

Pros: None

Cons: Small, Crowded, Noisy, Unfriendly staff.
