What Our Expert Scouts Say

Space Needle
May 14, 2013

Tony Bourdain might not be a fan -- he said so on the Seattle episode of The Layover -- but there's nothing that says Seattle quite like this iconic structure. Zoom to the top for an incredible view, but be sure and read about its fascinating history. It's on the pricey side, but well worth it. Expect long lines in the busy summer months, though you can dodge the crowds if you hit it early or late.

Tickets to get to the top aren't cheap but the wealth of Seattle-based knowledge and stellar views you walk away with are priceless. Even on a cloudy day, it is worth the trip up!

She is a beauty and while views of her from around the city have started to be blocked I'm always happy to catch a glimpse of her.Grab a ticket and enjoy the view!

Dining at the Space Needle. My husband had a birthday recently and we took his parents out to eat to the Space Needle. His parents were delighted with the view and the height but when it came to food....disappointment. The "steer and pier" was embarrassing for the price. We were told we would get 3-4 crab legs, we got one! And the steak was tiny with a dab of mashed potatoes. I ordered the seafood fettucini and it had an unpleasant sour taste. Either too much lemon or sour wine. The seafood was undercooked and had that water taste if you know what I mean. Our bill turned out to be $300 for a party of 4. Wow well we will definitely skip the restaurant next time. I love gourmet food and this was not the quality that I expected for the price.

Go for the view, not the food.. If you associate the price with the food only, you'll be disappointed. The price is also for the view, which is unmatched. A rotating restaurant? Who else compares?

The food is ok. Just ok.

The sorbet trio is cool when they bring it out with smoking dry ice, but they don't tell you that they charge extra for the dry ice.

Comparatively to other restaurants, the crab cakes were gross.

So although the view is outstanding, the food is just ok, which makes me rate it 3 stars.

Beautiful view, but you pay for it.. Not great food, crowded, expensive, but fantastic views. Good to see once or twice, but I doubt I'll go back.

Great View + Great Food + Great Staff. I’ve been to the Space Needle occasionally throughout the years, but my most recent trip showed a number of delightful changes that now make this place undeniably the ultimate do-not-miss Seattle dining experience, definitely for out-of-town visitors, but also for us locals. There were so many new things to discover, that we asked, and sure enough, within the last couple of years a new head chef and new management were added.

We started with some appetizers, including the Dungeness Crab Cakes, and the Grilled Rustic Flat Bread with goat cheese and pesto, followed by Grilled Wild King Salmon and Seafood Fettucine. They were perfect. The scallops were butter-tender. My husband said the salmon ranked up with the best he’d ever had.

While we ate, our attention was divided between the constantly-changing view of the city, as the restaurant very slowly rotated around, and the dramatic, huge desserts that passed by our table. We really wanted to try one of them, but just had no room.

Dinner guests get to go up to the observation deck, and you’ll want to. Here’s something new – they’ve solved the problem of having guests’ Seattle view photos less than perfect due to weather. You have your photo taken in front of a green screen downstairs, then upstairs you have the choice of different great shots to be in, and a digital image is produced that you can e-mail right from the top of the Space Needle. There’s no charge for this. They also added a bar for the adults and a deli snack bar for the kids.

We’ve had out of town guests come in over the last few years that we haven’t treated to the Space Needle for dinner. We won’t omit this stop again.

Elegant Dining. I absolutely positively love everything about our trip to The Space Needle today (and for brunch a previous time)! While expensive, the food, view, wait staff and everything else about our visit was perfect!

In addition to the yummy food you get a trip to the top of the Space Needle to enjoy the wonderful view of Seattle and the Sound...seriously, how could you want more?

Go, try it for yourself and feel pampered and special for a couple of hours!

Go for the view, not the food!. I would give the trip up to the Space Needle and the observation deck 5 stars and the restaurant 1 star. There are SO many amazing restaurants in Seattle- for the money, dinner at the Space Needle is NOT worth it. If I'm paying over $30 for salmon, it better be amazing and the Space Needle simply is not. Its really too bad- it has so much potential. How hard would it be to hire a talented chef to redesign the menu?

Instead of dinner, go up to the observation deck. It's worth the money. Then go to dinner at a Tom Douglas restaurant, Place Pigalle, Matt's in the Market or Steelhead Diner- all far superior (and the same price if not cheaper) than the Space Needle.

You'll experience stunning Seattle scenery and a perfect meal without feeling like you wasted your money. Until the Space Needle can deliver food to match the views, skip the dinner!

best restaurant in the Galaxy. We had the most delicious dinner, the salmon was cooked perfectly, the service was outstanding, and of course, the Luner Orbiter was just how I remembered when the space needle opened 62 when I was 7. Maybe the space needle is dear to my heart, and the needle was designed by a brilliant Mr. John Graham. I have eaten and spent alot of money in many fine restaurants in my time. and the space needle is at the top. I cant understand why anyone would complain because thy didn't get butter and salt on their asparagus. I can jolly well put my own salt and butter on asparagus.

Space Needle-Dining--pass. I sent 2 lobster tails back! The worse I ever had.

The waiter started out to be the best, then when the lobster was sent back twice with a very lame excuse from him, he never came around again.

The prices were so unreasonalbe!

Major tourist trap!

Not everything that shines is gold. We were staying over night is Seattle, awaiting a cruise. Went to have dinner at the space needle restaurant. Seating was prompt and the view was AMAZING. The Caesar salad ($9) was probably one of the best I had yet. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir. The waiter had no clue about the differences between the various bottles. The wine he suggested was tasteless, fizzy and low quality ($46). We ordered the filet mignon ($51) and the kobe sirloin ($49). The food was delivered to the table by the kitchen, and they had no idea which was which. We called our waiter and he said which was which. Well, he was wrong again...in the end, we figured out by tasting it. The food presentation was very simple, the asparagus did not have any salt or butter on them, the potatoes did not complement the meat at all, the sauce's taste left much to be desired and they pepper crusted the wrong stake (should have been the kobe sirloin, not the filet...the menu said one thing, but the waiter insisted on the other). We did not order dessert.

In the end, we spent $216 (including tip) for an average and lack luster meal.

If you want to visit the space needle, go to the observation deck, but skip the restaurant. Unless you want crappy service, tasteless food and you have utterly disregard for your wallet.
