Tips for Sunlight Cafe

Life is too short to eat at the Sunlight Cafe.. My partner and I are vegan. We went to the Sunlight where a waitress made us wait several minutes to be seated even though there were many tables open. We waited another several minutes for water as we looked at the menus and waited at least another 5 minutes for our coffee. The meals required extra increments of $.50 to upgrade to tofu and to add on extras to make the meal, as we learned later, actually have taste.

Service was bad and the food did not help. The Veggie Sunlight Tofu Scramble had no seasoning, even though there was supposed to be a ginger sauce on it, with tofu that didn't seem to be cooked. The Huevos Rancheros was okay- at best.

Don't settle for the mediocrity of the Sunlight Cafe.

Filling, savory, yummy.. I brought my meat-loving French boyfriend to Sunlight on a busy Sunday morning/afternoon for brunch. He was skeptical, but ended up loving the fritata he got. The "home fries" (in french "saute") were popular, along with the hearty english muffin. I had the delux huevos rancheros with perfectly done black beans and home fries. Topped it off with a seasonal berry smoothie. Service was very good, even with a full house and a large group waiting. Sunrise has clearly changed it's staff and really improved service since some of the posts listed here. Be sure to walk around to some of the Roosevelt Neighborhood stores after you're done with brunch, lunch, or breakfast. PS--Brunch goes 'til 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Good but time to add to the menu. the menu could use some new additions. The food is good if one orders carefully like the nutburger or lasagna. The eggs on sunday didnt fill me up and kind of are high priced. So its a good vegetarian place that could improve a little

Vegetarian Breakfast. Excellent breakfast and vegetarian to boot. Don't be scared off by the "vegetarian" label.

Healthy fare without pretension at this sunny vegetarian oasis in Roosevelt.. In Short
Vegetarian food is king at this bright cafe, where a steady clientele of aging hippies, vegans and other health-conscious citizens chow on diner food with a good-for-you twist. The south room is well-lit from a wall of windows, while the darker north room has wooden booths and a counter. Menu items include a long list of salads, pasta dishes and sandwiches like the nutburger--a patty of roasted nuts, rice and vegetables.

Love this place. The food is always just darn yummy and filling and nutritious. I am definitely a regular. The dishes to try are: nutburger, the portabello mushroom burger, all the mexican dishes and the steamed veggies with rice. Great salads too. The service can vary from day to day, but that's part of the fun for me. I bring friends here and tell them, service may be weird but wait till you taste the food. And the food NEVER disappoints so far. By the way the deserts are yummy too and for a final treat, try the Yogi tea.

Simple vegetarian food done right.. When I first saw the menu at the Sunlight Cafe, I was a little disappointed that it didn't seem to have many creative dishes. Most of the food seemed like things that I could find at any veggie-friendly restaurant. As it turned out, the Sunlight Cafe specializes in those ordinary dishes and makes them the way they should be made. My friend had the portabello sandwich with pesto and I had the vegetable lasagne. The lasagne was huge and its sauce almost overflowed from the bowl. We also split an appetizer of sweet potato patties with soy dipping sauce. Hint: They taste good with the honey as well. There is parking on the street in front of the restaurant. The place seems cheerful, the large front windows are nice, and the staff is friendly and attentive. I'd definitely go back.

Real Vegetarian Food. I've eaten vegetarian all my life and the Sunlight serves REAL homestyle vegetarian food...and it's delicious. The ambiance is hippy, service is laid back, but it goes with the experience. The menu hosts a nice varietyof meals ranging from healthy and delicious steamed veggies and tofu in light ginger sauce to sandwiches to decadent grilled polenta with black beans tomatoes and cheese. Best salads in town made chocked full of fresh raw veggies and the best Tahini dressing ever!

I have been eating here for years and they are never hurting for customers. My non vegetarian friends love it too!

Unbelievably Bad Service. I was initially annoyed that they have no omelets. Its not clear why, since they serve both eggs and cheese. The huevos rancheros were the closest, so I got them. Ordered them with the avocado and cheese (two add-ons for which you pay extra), but skipped the sour cream. After taking a bite of my food when it arrived, I realized there was sour cream on it, but neither cheddar cheese nor avocado. When server was told about the mistake, she confirmed that I ordered it correctly and apologized. She took it away and came back within 60 seconds. The fix: sour cream scraped off, half cup of guacamole slopped on top. Worse, I was charged I had ordered it even though I never got cheese! Other people say service is bad. Normally food trumps service, but this was inexcusable. I will never go back there again.

Tasty vegetarian food. I don't usually go to vegetarian restaurant, but I was in the neighborhood, so I decided to try it out for lunch. I had the mushroom burger and soup of the day (lima bean gumbo). The food was quite tasty, especially the soup. I'd come back again for lunch sometime.
