Editorial Review for Larsen's Original Bakery – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
Larsen's has been baking up pastries since 1974, when it was purchased by the Larsen brothers from Denmark. Those looking for a wedding cake will find traditional Danish cakes like croquembouche, cream puffs stacked into the shape of a pyramid, then drizzled with honey. Another traditional cake is kransekage, a hard almond-flavored wedding cake comprised of stacked rings, each smaller than the one below. They also bake European-style cakes with a Danish twist.

I'm a baker and a huge Larsen's fan- one of my friends even had me bring a suitcase full of pastries to her wedding in Boise for her Danish relatives. I was pleasantly surprised to find red velvet cake in their display case recently, and even more surprised that it was GOOD! Perfect cake(not too sweet), and delicious cream cheese frosting. Who knew a Scandinavian bakery could get this Southern delicacy right? With Cupcake Royale only doing red velvet part of the year, this is a great way to get your fix, and for the money Larsen's has the best cakes in town. Staff are always friendly(even when the line is long), and if you're a baker it's a great place to find marzipan to use yourself, as well as premade dough. Favorites: Chocolate croissant, almond bar, lemon cake with marzipan frosting, red velvet cake Least favorite: Chocolate mousse cups
Pros: Friendly service, easy parking on street, value
Cons: Occasionally sell out of items on weekends(come early!)

This place is a gold mine! I've been here twice in one week (I live in Redmond, you do the math) and it's so worth the drive. On my first trip I got a rum ball and a custard filled, chocolate topped pastry. Both were delicious, and since I happened to be in the area again, found myself in again. I had been craving a maple bar and since apperently they're amazing here, I really wanted on, but they'de SOLD OUT!!! I was forced to re-think. So, cream cheese danish and what was called a Kransekaka piece (they're on the website under cookies). The danish was superior to any other danish I've ever had. The perfect, light, flakey pastry, and the cream cheese filling (as close to cheesecake as one ought to be before 2pm) was just the right balance of salty-sweet. The Kransekaka piece was a gamble, but boy oh boy, did it pay off. After my first bite, I pulled a "When Harry Met Sally" moment in my car. Good thing I was stopped at a light already; that could've been deadly!
