Editorial Review for Malena's Taco Shop – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
This little cafe comprises only four tables and a little window counter. Most people order off the big menu board and take out their freshly made tacos, burritos, tamales and sandwiches known as tortas. Grilled fish comes drizzled with creamy sauce, while the shredded pork is accented with just a few crispy grilled bits. Rice and whole beans in a thick broth are available as sides.

My co-workers had raved about how good the food was and how "authentic" it was. Based on what they'd said, I was excited to try it because I have longed to find mexican food as good as what my home state of California has to offer. I didn't take into mind that my co-workers that recommended the place were all from Washington, and their opinion may differ from mine because they had never had the real thing. The food here was subpar. Very bland. And they serve Tostitos with salsa! Even the cheapest mexican restaurants and taco trucks in California use warm, homemade tortilla chips! Sparsely decorated; the atmosphere is as bland as the food.
Pros: Seated and served quickly.
Cons: The food is lacking flavor.

Okay, I am from San Diego and had to move up here for work. Anyone either from San Diego or has taken a trip to Southern California knows that Mexican food is a staple for us. So, when I read the reviews about Melena's I was hopeful! The nasty salsa with the tostito's chips (Tostito's...Seriously?) was a great shock. But what threw me off totally was the fact that everyone was eating their burrito with a knife and fork! What? Use your hands people! Got the carne asada burrito, (by the way, asada means that the meat is marinaded and seasoned while cooked), and I have to say that I have never spent so much money (18 bucks for 2 burritos!) on horrible, bland and strange mexican food, even from the worst mexican place in S.D.! Obviously I will never go back there! All should avoid this Mexi-Ain't restaurant! By the way...did you know that the same spelling of the restaurant (Melena) is used as a medical term for bloody stools! Bon Apetite!
Pros: Absolutely None!!! Well, Maybe one...Cleans out your GI Tract!
Cons: Way Too Many to site!
