Editorial Review for Five Point Cafe – by Paul Fontana

The Scene
The sticker on the cigarette machine reads, "Alcoholics serving alcoholics since 1929." Though partially based in fact, it's the self-deprecating attitude that's responsible for this watering hole's longevity. Dark, smoky and loud--especially in the evening--Five Point is that rare kind of spot where ashtrays are "cleaned" by dumping the contents on the floor, where the bartenders will axe a jukebox selection not to their liking and coasters occasionally whiz through the air. The floor is black and white, and so is the attitude--have a sense of humor or leave.

The Draw
Drinks are stiff and the staff is never shy, making this a welcome oasis for serious drinkers. The menu offers typical diner fare done right: Breakfasts are particularly strong, featuring endless hash browns that strike the delicate balance between crispiness and greasiness.

So...upon reading reviews I wanted to try this place out for breakfast since my husband and I love a good breakfast joint. That being said, I had to take a few to say that our visit to the 5 Point Cafe blew. We came for breakfast our first day visiting Seattle on a Saturday morning. I thought it was cool inside, definitely dive, with the locals on the one side at the bar, and a group of 4 at a table on the restaurant side. Note: besides us, only one other table with people (and they were done eating). We ordered a couple of short stacks, a side of ham an OJ and some water. Got the food, but come to find out...its very difficult to eat pancakes without utensils, and tend to be a lil dry without some butter and syrup, so we requested these "special" items from our waitress, along with the water and OJ that hadn't come yet. I had eaten about half my first pancake by tearing it into pieces before the forks came. :( The food actually was pretty decent, not earth-shaking, but good. We had determined that we'll get something to drink after we leave since our waitress wasn't able to sit at the counter for as long as she did and hand us a couple of glasses of beverages. Taxing, I know! We heard the people at the other table asking for their check and then later questioning the prices saying..."no, we had this...not that" etc. Isn't that what they write the orders down for? LOL. We decided at that point to go directly to the cash register rather than wait for the check. So when we went to pay, my husband asked her to take the OJ off, and the waitress asked why...he stated...well, we never got it. She said, "oh really?". WTF? We were one of two occupied tables! Anyway, I found it pretty laughable. I have never actually had that bad of service. And when I say bad, I mean it. She was a total dingbat. :) But I still loved Seattle!!

Pros: Decent ham slice and pancakes

Cons: Service blew

The 5 point used to be our favorite breakfast stop...we only stopped going because we found somewhere closer to our apt. The food is great and the sercive is what' you expect from a dive bar. It's clean enough and a great place to go after being out at the bars.
