What People Are Saying About Neighbours-Disco

In Short – Every city has one: The disco that just won't die. Few in the gay community will admit to having a bruised affection for it, but it somehow continues to succeed where others fail. This glorified warehouse is alive with young club boys, their female friends, the city's best drag queens and curious straight folks out for a walk on the wild side. It is, for better or worse, what most people imagine a gay bar to be like.

Seemingly harmless dress code (WASN'T POSTED!) 86's you!

by Velvetsea at Citysearch

Who would think that showing up in a "GAY-friendly" and casual club would get you booted out for wearing a GAY TRENDY/cultural bandana (white no less)?!

We have gone to this place for years and years. The LAST time was several months ago when we presented at the club for a celebration. Not having ANY clue as to there being a so-called "dress code" upon arriving (none in the past), my friend is warned that she must take off her bandana if she enters. NO WHERE was there any sort of "dress code" posted outside. Feeling embarassed as now her hair was a disaster (and her lesbian pride hurt) she begrudgingly removed it and entered. While security said that she should "remove it or get out of the club" we decided it was time after a while to go - so on it went and towards the door we were heading (just like previously commanded.) Security decided to put a show on for the club as he pushed my door-bound friend several times from the back because he didn't think we were exiting fast enough.

Despite the constant paranoia that is of the presumed 'gang attire' (assuming) why just pick on one item that declares to consume just THE culture/lifestyle? I appreciate and understand the club's concern for upholding safety for it's patrons and such but who gets to decide what is unsafe clothing or not?! They are going the wrong way about it. So much for freedom of my gay expression...and so much for that club.

  • Pros: Music/people variety, cheap entry fee
  • Cons: Not as "friendly" and "open" as it used to be!

A fun place

by kemeshiwar at Citysearch

This is a really fantastic club. The bartenders are always friendly, the staff are always working hard to pick up empty glasses, and the DJ keeps the music going without skipping a beat. The crowd here is definitely a late night crowd so don't bother coming early unless you want the dance floor to yourself. They play mostly techno and remix with very little top 40 or anything you'd hear in other mainstream clubs. The drinks are generally good and if you get hungry, Javier sets up shop with the best hotdogs in town just at the end of the alley!

My only word of warning is to girls who come in to dance with their friends. There are usually several perverts posing as gay men on the dance floor looking to take advantage of a girl who they think has been drinking. Just be careful and be sure you stay with someone you know at all times and you'll be fine!

  • Pros: Positive atmosphere

Empty all your pockets and assume the position

by FireTypeCracker at Citysearch

Neighbours has a nice gay/mixed crowd and I have been a steady patron for 2 years but lately I look for other places to go. At the door the new security guards have me empty my pockets and turn around to be throughly searched.

I have noticed that they also walk around the club looking for people to throw out. Walk funny, talk too loud or act intoxicated and you are gone with no refund and your drink emptied.

It is too bad because it used to be fun now its more like a prison. Try The Cuff, Madison St. Pub or R-Place. They treat their customers with much more respect than Neighbours.

  • Pros: Some people are gay, sometime I meet someone
  • Cons: TOO much security, Staff treats customers like criminals
