In Short – Discovery Park is the crown jewel in the impressive array of Seattle's wild parks. This 534-acre park, which surrounds Fort Lawton military installation, has three main entrances and an extensive trail network, ranging from bluff-top strolls to sandy beach walks. A good introduction is the 2.8-mile loop from the visitor center. You'll pass through a forest of old-growth, broad-leaved trees and second-growth conifers, with overlooks featuring excellent views of Puget Sound below. – – Photo by Chris Daniel

Perfect in town adventure

by Paidneff at Citysearch

If you don't have time to make it to the many hiking trails outside of Seattle then Discovery Park makes a great escape for the outdoor lover. It is a huge park that sits at the tip of Magnolia and is filled with trails and great water views. I would recommend walking around (instead of driving) the trails and taking in all the natural beauty this city park has to offer. It is an odd setup though and some of the signs can be mis-leading, so I would grab a map at the visitor's center before wandering around. This park does have a lot of open space and if you don't have to time to make it out of the city, it could be a great adventure into nature.

A Jewel in the City

by irwin3637 at Citysearch

It's becoming more and more popular. But if visitors keep their dogs on a leash and stay on existing trails, then the beauty of Discover Park will last for a very long time.

  • Pros: A complete escape right in the city.
  • Cons: The word is out.

The Details on Discovery Park

Know Before You Go:

Sea lions, seals, even porpoises and orca whales are occasionally spotted off West Point, and at least one pair of nesting bald eagles calls the park home. But don't feed the animals: This park is a designated sanctuary.
