Editorial Review for Gold Mountain Golf Course – by

Par: old course: men 71, women 74; new course: men 72, women 72
Rating/Slope: men 68.6/116, women 69.9/116

This 36-hole layout is one of the finest public golf venues in Washington. The Olympic Course (opened in September 1996) features extensive mounding, varied terrain and tree-lined fairways. Bunkers front sloping greens on either side. Be careful not to end up on the wrong side of the pin: It can be a bear to putt. On several holes, the new course also brings water into play — a major factor on approach shots.

Built in 1972, the older course at Golf Mountain is a long, demanding layout in its own right. The course stretches nearly 6,800 yards from the back tees. Northwest golfers regard the layout as championship caliber.

Despite hosting nearly 65,000 rounds of golf annually, Gold Mountain remains in remarkably great shape year-round, with above-average drainage. The on-course pro shop meets all of a golfer's needs, and host PGA pro Scott Alexander is happy to answer your questions.

Directions: From Interstate 5, take Exit 132 to state Route 16 West. Travel west to state Route 3 South. Go straight on Sam Christopherson Avenue to West Belfair Valley Road. Turn left and follow for 2.3 miles to the course on your left.

From the Bremerton Ferry veer left to First for one block to Burwell (state Route 304 West). Follow signs to Shelton and to Route 3 South. Turn south on Route 3 South to Sam Christopherson Avenue. Turn right to West Belfair Valley Road. Turn left, and go 2.3 miles. —Dan MacMillan

One of the finest public courses in the Northwest if not the country.

Pros: inexpensive, spikeless, playing time

Cons: location, location, location

Gold Mountain is still the king around here, when you add up all the factors. Price, Course, Staff, Amenities. I still like the old course better, it seems to have more...um...character.
