Editorial Review for Grand Illusion Cinema – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
This U-District theater started its life in 1970, and was said to have sparked Seattle's infatuation with indie flicks. But by the mid-'90s, film-goers could find the same arty movies in much fancier theaters. The Grand Illusion was saved by the Northwest Film Forum, an energetic group of Capitol Hill-based filmmakers who wanted to show their favorite experimental and archival films. It's now one of the best spots in town for revival films.

Insider Tips

Look Good

Get some popcorn, still traditionally popped in an old-fashioned popper. Sprinkle some nutritional yeast or curry powder on top for flavor.

Where to Sit

Head there early to snag the loveseat in the back of the theater.

i'm a fan of vintage and cozy; this theater encompasses all that... it's great! and the ambience is very laid back, where everyone is just there to enjoy a strange movie... the staff are very friendly too!
