Tips for Husky Stadium

Purple and gold, boat-gating and a gorgeous view. No college football stadium in the country has what Husky Stadium boasts - a breathtaking view of Lake Washington and the Cascades and the ability to literally sail to the game. You don't have to be a UW grad or even a Husky fan to enjoy a game here. When the sun is out in early fall and the team is pummeling some hapless Pac-10 competition, there's no better place to be in Seattle.

While they don't sell beer inside, you can easily pick up a drink in the hospitality tents outside or among the undergrad hordes in the north parking lots. You'll want to bundle up as the season rolls along and some bitter winds whip across the lake, and until the light rail construction is finished in 2016 the traffic in the area will be even worse than normal on game days. An upcoming renovation should jazz up some of the more retro elements like the old-school bleacher seating.

But the Stadium's location, aura and history remain constant throughout the cosmetic facelifts. And now that the team is actually good, you can spend some time admiring the on-field product as well.

Enjoy the view, do the wave and watch one of the top teams in the country.. The Lowdown
All you need to know about Husky stadium is this: It's Keith Jackson's favorite place to watch a college football game. On game day, every visiting team has to take that long walk up the purple tunnel, with barking of angry grown men echoing in their ears. Well, it is college football.

The History
Dating back to the 1920's, this stadium has seen John Elway and Sonny Sixkiller and O.J. Simpson. In the '80s, it survived the collapse of an entire section (the present north upper deck), a rumble that sent university employees scurrying under their desks fearing an earthquake.

A New Look
Until this year, the Astroturf field was shaped like a dome to help drainage. But if you stood on one sideline, you could see someone on the other sideline only from the chest up. This year, a new turf has been installed. Look for fewer knee injuries and less tripping on the midfield hump.

The Best in the PAC-10. Husky Stadium is one of the most majestic and imposing (for opposing teams at least) stadiums in the PAC-10. Gear up for a Husky game by taking mass transit and wearing enough clothing to endure the howling winds that flow from Lake Washington. Go Dawgs! No beer in the stadium though . . .
