Editorial Review for 16th Street Mall – by Dave Flomberg

In Short
After the oil bust of the late '70s turned downtown into a ghost town, Denver needed a way to attract people back to the city. The 16th Street Mall was the first step in that massive revitalization effort--and one that paid mighty dividends. With several blocks of hotels, restaurants and shops, the mall is an urban walkway that cuts a swath through Denver's bustling metropolis. People from every walk of life frequent the mall.

One of my earliest memories is being taken downtown by my mom and grandma for the grand opening of 16th Street Mall in 1982. I loved it then when I was 2, and I love it even more now! I spent many happy hours strolling up and down 16th Street when I was in college over at CU-Denver. To this day, even though I now live in the Tech Center, I still try to make it a point to go down there at least once a month and just walk around, checking stuff out. It's just urban enough to be cool, yet has no pretentious air about it, like that which you'd find in Cherry Creek North or even Pearl Street Mall, to some extent. It's fun for everyone!

Pros: Excellent people-watching, good vibe, ambience

Cons: Food/drink a little pricey

Denver's first foray into tourism-fueled commerce is still the city's busiest pedestrian mall.  See the full editorial review.
