Editorial Review for Waterfront Park – by Mary Fran Schneiter

Overview
A concrete-and-wood promenade leads to steel viewing towers between Piers 57 and 59. Nautical-themed steps plunge to renovated warehouses and wooden ramps link to a viewing gallery. A wide deck proffers tables and benches with a view. People relax by the bronze fountain along Pier 59, designed by the famous Seattle sculptor James Fitzgerald.

The Background
At the turn of the century, Burlington Northern Railroad built tracks parallel to this shoreline, putting the trading piers out of commission. The rail eased the transportation of goods, opened new markets and boosted the local economy. In preparation for the 1962 World's Fair, city officials opened the shore for waterfront tourism. The vast span of wharves is now occupied by festive shops and attractions, from Ivars' Acres of Clams to Pirates Plunder's array of Space Needle-inspired memorabilia.

If you are a romantic, this is an awesome place to watch fireworks from. If you are not, it is still an awesome place to go, listen to music, and kick it with your crowd. It is one of those things that if you are in Seattle, you must do it at least once.
