Overview
Marymoor Velodrome's 400-meter oval draws some of the country's best bicycle racers each year, usually in national championships featuring collegiate, senior, or category 1 (the cream of the crop) competitors. But on any given, weather-permitting Friday night from May to August, spectators gather here with picnic baskets and blankets, with eyes focused on the Northwest's best.
Facts
Track racing, where cyclists use one-speed, brakeless bikes, is more a sport of cunning than strength. Strategy counts more than endurance, and quick wits will win 9 times out of 10. Spectators get into Friday Night Racing for $3, and they're treated to an announcer who explains and narrates the events in simple terms. You can enroll in the Marymoor Velodrome Association's $40 bike-handling courses, which teach the basics of track racing to beginners and seasoned cyclists alike.
