Editorial Review for Calcutta Grill – by Anna Roth
In Short
Decorated with an eye to British colonial style, the cozy main room of Newcastle Golf Club's restaurant features lush wooden accents, wicker chairs, spacious wrap-around booths, Indian-inspired paintings and a large fireplace. A long outdoor patio has the best view in town, offering scenes of downtown Seattle and Bellevue, Lake Washington, Puget Sound and the Olympics. The menu focuses on Northwest favorites, featuring classic fish dishes and locally-raised steaks.

What happened?! This used to be 1 of my favorite places; it is VERY heartbreaking to see how much this place has declined. The once attentive, knowledgeable staff has been replaced by warm bodies. My friends & I decided to enjoy dinner & a view at Calcutta Grill. The oblivious hostess sat our party @ a table w/a nice centerpiece of sticky mystery sauce & was trying to hand us our menus WHILE we were trying to dust off a layer of crumbs off of our seats. & what a shock! They now have a pub style menu! So now I get fish & chips w/a world class view? Where did all the romance go?! We did not see our waitress for 10-15 mins. When she finally came, we asked her about some wine & she irritatedly pointed to the most expensive wines but couldn't really give any reasons why. Maybe because she had no idea? We ordered cocktails instead, which took so long that my margarita had a layer of water on top of it; not ice. We would have asked for more lettuce to break up our good but COMPLETELY overdressed caesars, but our waitress did not even check up on us until she was dropping off our entrees. ALL 3 of our orders of scallops were overcooked to inedibility. The (med. well; not med.rare) beef tenderloin had a nice wine sauce, but the veggies tasted like they spent 1 year too long in a freezer. Again, our waitress did not come until we gave up on our meals. & the restrooms! The restrooms @ Newcastle are beautifully appointed w/marble, have completely enclosed stalls, & have all the toiletries you need. Well, this time, the garbages were overflowing onto the countertop & floor, w/TAMPON wrappers, & 2 stalls had no toilet paper. & get this! Talking on her PHONE in there the WHOLE time was the housekeeper! Where did their El Gaucho like standards go?! When we were leaving, the general manager was @ the front desk & asked us how our night went. We all looked at each other & laughed & shrugged & all he said was, “Okay, well, have a good night!” With service like that, why come back?
Pros: The view
Cons: Everything else!

The 2-Fer coupon mailed to local residents the month of October was a huge factor in our group deciding to dine there recently. While the food has never been what would be considered 5-star, it is seasonal and tasty with a nice variety of choices, especially the pastas and seafood. Happy Hour (Mon-Fri.) is a great time to relax, enjoy the fabulous view and partake in some of the many inventive cocktails (yum to the Calcutta Cosmo) or the basic beer/wine selections. An array of 1/2 price appetizers including calamari, nachos and the oh-so popular sliders is an inexpensive way to fill up fast. Casey, our waiter, was a lot of fun to banter with AND he was very attentive all evening. You can't go wrong with that combo. We have enjoyed the very expensive Sunday brunch on special occasions and lunch on the patio during the warm summer months. A very nice place to be at any time.
