Editorial Review for Ruby's Diner – by Cory Jane Birkett

In Short
In 1982, businessman Doug Cavanaugh opened the first Ruby's in Southern California's Newport Beach, naming it after his mother. Today, this nationwide chain--adorned with red vinyl booths, Formica tables, soda fountains and retro posters--features the same timeless food and hospitality that keep diners coming back. Favorites are the classic burgers topped with secret RubySauce, fries and sweet shakes. Other staples include pancakes, omelettes, sandwiches, chili, salads and a variety of fountain treats.

While this place is known for its burgers, this is also one of my favorite breakfast joints on the Eastside - and the only place I can find turkey sausage since I do not partake in The Swine. The breakfast burrito is to die for. The waitresses are cute & friendly, and the model trains running overhead occasionally derail for some amusement over the meal. Worth the regional drive.

Pros: great breakfast, quality, friendly service

Cons: train calamities
