Editorial Review for McCarthy & Schiering – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
The two McCarthy & Schiering wine shops are like fraternal twins--The Ravenna store is the scruffy older sibling, serving a thoughtful university crowd that overlooks the tired blue linoleum, cluttered aisles, and musty basement smell. The Queen Anne shop is the pretty baby that conveniently shares its present location with A&J Meats. Decked out in trendy pea-green, track lighting and tidy racks, it caters to hurried, moneyed, young professionals.

Knowledgeable folks, dedicated to wine and interested in talking about it. That's the whole point of a wine mercahnt. Add to that selection and price, particualry if you are a Vintage Sleect member, and you have the combination fora great wine store.

Pros: Good selection, Knowledgeable staff

Cons: Only 2 locations

Ho-Hum...Seen all this before. Great wine shop, with a terrific selection and reasonable prices but a huge, unbending broomstick up its posterior. These guys take themselves VERY seriously. I get the distinct impression that they think they're so clearly the premiere wine store in Seattle that their upper lips curl just by reflex. You'll find every one of their wines, at better prices, at Town & Country Market on Bainbridge, minus all that attitude. Example: that smarmy sign calling for an end to all oak barrels. News flash, M&S: some people LIKE oak. Wise up, smile more, move up on the list.

Pros: good stock choices, knowledgeable

Cons: ATTITUDE
