Editorial Review for Bainbridge Island – by Andrea Burtness
The Experience
For mainland Seattleites, Bainbridge Island is the perfect day trip. The 35-minute ferry ride is a short, pleasant experience and once on the island, there are plenty of options to explore. Winslow, the island's main town, offers charming shops and restaurants. But for real exploring, don't miss the impressive Bloedel Reserve. It's a beautiful walk through several acres of landscaped property. The former owners gifted each other ponds and waterfalls instead of ties and blenders; the resulting area is an enduring sight for everyone.
The Background
In the early 1940s, around 250 Japanese farmers operated farms on Bainbridge Island, growing crops like strawberries and vegetables. In 1943, the farmers were replaced by Alaskan cannery workers, recruited by the federal governments War Relocation Program.

Insider Tips
When to GoAny time of year is fine, but to take advantage of the best weather, go midsummer. Time your return ferry trip with the sunset.
Know Before You GoBring $2 (cash) for a tasting at Bainbridge Winery. The grapes are all grown on the island--unlike many local wineries that import their fruit from the other side of the Cascades.

It is so good to have a nice time with family for a day. There is a small, calm town but great place to have a trip.
