Editorial Review for Downtown Portland – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
Even though Portland has many vibrant, bustling neighborhoods, downtown is truly the heart and soul of the city. Pioneer Courthouse Square is at the center of Portland's downtown, an open-air "living room" for office workers, sidewalk vendors and folks from all walks of life. Entertainment options include Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Portland Art Museum and Portland Center for Performing Arts. Shopping is anchored by Pioneer Place's dozens of high-end stores, plus the Columbia Sportswear flagship store.

With the shops, restaurants, theatres, pubs & bars and free transportation from one end of it all to the other (think of Tri-Met as the world's biggest escalator), who'd choose to go to a mall instead? Downtown Portland may be the cleanest city in the United States, and it's designed for fun and convenience. Best strategy is to park outside downtown and take the MAX light rail in, as car-accessibility issues are downtown's biggest shortcoming.
Pros: convenient, diverse, clean
Cons: traffic, parking
