Editorial Review for Literati Cafe – by Sandy Masuo
The Scene
High ceilings and exposed brick walls plastered with black-and-white photos of literary heroes lend this coffeehouse an airy, industrial look. Lunch draws a chatty business crowd, while off-peak hours are the domain of solo scribes sipping coffee and tapping away on laptops.
The Food
Besides fueling the novel-writing masses with their daily caffeine fixes, the raison d'être here is healthy eating. Most lunch dishes are sided by faintly dressed organic greens, and at breakfast, artery-clogging extras such as hash browns and bacon are only available by request. Traditionally rich dishes, like an underseasoned eggs Florentine, lack verve, so stick to the waistline-friendly sandwiches and salads. The Turkey Asparagus Affair wraps tender turkey slices around blanched asparagus spears on a robust, crusty bread. The Caprese salad, usually a delicate affair, is more of a meal, with big slabs of fresh mozzarella and thick chunks of tomatoes on mixed greens.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoLiterati Cafe makes an excellent place to sit and read or study. Hole up for hours next to the comfy fireplace and sip delicious and healthy soups or coffee concoctions.
ParkingThe cafe shares an overcrowded parking lot in the rear of the building. Try the meters on Wilshire. The adjacent lot is for Ralph's supermarket, so you can try to park there and sneak past the guard, but it can be tricky.

Once you walk in Literati it feels like you are anywhere but on wilshire. There is such a cozy atmosphere, and great bookish feel to the whole place that you can't resist staying for a while. Their sandwiches and tea are definitely where it's at. I would definitely recommend it as a place to study, or grab lunch, or both. The staff is always friendly and the food is generally pretty cost effective too. I really can't say anything bad about this place. If you're looking for a quiet place to study/get lunch. This is it.

When I’m not near an Urth, my next choice is Literati. I love how books have been cemented in like bricks on the wall. Their salads and sandwiches are always fresh, and the desserts are so rich and tasty. They also have a good breakfast menu. There’s also a patio outback for those who don’t want to dine inside. Ironically though, can’t say I’ve tried the coffee.
