Editorial Review for Crif Dogs – by Karen Hudes
The Scene
There aren't many eateries in New York where you can play Galaga, Centipede or Ms. Pac-Man while downing franks, but this place keeps the '80s spirit of the block alive. A mixed crowd sprawls out among the checkered tables and counter stools, eyeing posted specialties like the Spicy Redneck ("makes you want to marry your cousin") or the more demure root-beer float ("One straw or two?").
The Food
Dog choices are limited to the standard Crif (an up-to-snuff smoked frank), the snappier, bolder-tasting all-beef New Yorker and the veggie, delivered in signature combos, ranging from the satisfying chili dog to more eccentric styles. Once you've abandoned yourself to the lipid-rich, brain-dissolving Chihuahua--wrapped in bacon and topped with avocado and sour cream--you may be ruined for any other 3am meal. Fries are somewhat bland, but the shakes and egg creams add flair.

Crif Dogs is a really cool little place tucked away at the end of St. Mark's near the park - you can find it by the "Eat Here" hot dog signs. I've always found the counter girls to be friendly and the dogs can't be beat. I like the New York snappy dog - a skinny little tasty morsel hidden in the soft Wonder bun... all it needs is a little mustard... my friends love the Chihuahua Crif dog. I recommend grabbing one and heading over to the park to watch the real dogs in action or just kick back at one of the little tables inside. They have some cool retro video games - and a mystery behind the phone booth. Bottom line - a fun place with character and real good dogs.

My office placed an order for dogs, tots and fries, even a stoner special. We didn't receive any of our chili cheese fries after we paid for them and left. Couldn't go back to get them after that (work day an all) and they would not send a delivery person with 3 orders to cover those. We had to go down there the next day just to get a refund of our money already paid for the fries. All in all no effort made by them to refund us our money or get us our fries. In NYC, you take your chances, but never again with Crif Dogs.
