Editorial Review for Chillie's Paste – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
An older, renovated bungalow houses this cozy restaurant located on the outskirts of Fremont. Bright orange walls, a few Thai portraits and the building itself provide charm; the surrounding neighborhood provides a steady supply of students and young couples. Chewy chunks of calamari, deep-fried in a crisp batter and served with a sweet dipping sauce is a good bet, as is savory pad thai and simple dessert of fresh mango and sweet, sticky rice.

I am not a thai food person. But when I stopped in at this cozy little spot in Fremont, I fell head-over-heels in love with their food. The orange chicken is made with real, fresh strips of orange zest! It is the most fantastic orange chicken I've ever had. I always make a pig of myself by ordering it with a side of rice and maybe some veggies... all for myself! My boyfriend is lucky if I let him have any. It's situated in an older house-come-restaurant, and feels like home. This would also be a great place for a date, since the staff is so friendly, polite, and come when you want them, not when you don't. The atmosphere is also very much something to be desired in the current scene of hipster bars and rude patrons. One cannot help but feel at ease in this place. I've dined at Chillie's Paste with close friends, and they've always raved over the food. You cannot go wrong here. Even when ordering take out, they seem genuinely glad to see you enjoying their food, and offer tea while you wait. Please try Chillie's Paste. It's one of Seattle's best kept secrets.

Pros: Food, Ambience, Service, Value.

Cons: Parking is on-street, but usually available.

The service is AWFUL. But I have to say their food is good. I really have enjoyed that they deliver... and I order out a lot. But I have been treated very rudely by the girl who often answers the phone... I have over looked it in the past because I just want some decent thai delivered and I don't want to cook... But after tonight I think I will find a new place. I called to order take out. The girl who answered the phone asked "how may I help you?" I said I wanted to order delivery. She mumbled something that sounded like "hold on"... then I sat for 5 minutes and listened to her carry on a personal conversation with a woman in the restaurant. I learned that she thinks she needs to lose weight and that the woman has just moved... and that they just went on vacation... and oh how blue the water is... They chatted on and on....hmmm she just couldn't decide what color to paint her living room... blah blah.... I was really confused. I wondered if she thought the call had dropped and not placed the phone down properly... Even though I wanted to hang up... even MORE I wanted to find out what the heck was going on! Literally after 5 minutes (on my cell phone) she came back to the phone with a sharp, "ok what do you want?" I couldn't believe it. I told her I thought that what she just did was super unprofessional and rude. I told her I could hear the entire conversation and that I was SHOCKED that she'd carry on such babble while a customer was waiting. I told her a least actually put me on hold so I am not so aware I am getting passed over for idle chatter! I told her I suddenly lost my appetite for Chili Paste... but that I wanted to speak to her manager. Of course no manager was around... Fair warning. The service is horrible!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: food decent

Cons: horrible service - more than a few times
