This place is addictive! Great for lunch as it isn't as busy. and if it's cold, sit at the counter grill where the tortillas are being hand made! The tamale is not to be missed!
Lucky for us the proprietor was wise enough to commission back-lit Spike Mafford photographs of Oaxaca, as well as hiring a Oaxacan family to run the front and back of house. That means we get first rate authentic mole, posole and moletas in a modern room chock full or gorgeous images that transport us to Mexico.

Most people get the "La Carta De" down, it's the Oaxaca that throws them off. It's pronounced wuh-HAW-kuh, as in, "Let's take a walka down to Ballard Avenue for lunch!"
hope your thirsty. A bit too trendy for my own taste. The menu items are inexpensive, but you end up buying 2 or 3 dishes just to fill slightly satisfied. The margaritas on the other hand were excellent, and they had a great selection of Mexican beers.
Mexican food as it should be. The food is incredible & a good selection of Mexican beers to wash it down. The starter bowl of chips comes to the table HOT & the salsa bar has a big variety so I could dine on chips, salsa, guacamole and beer alone. Seating is limited, 3 or 4 separate groups of diners often have to share the same big table. The food is excellent (except for the empanada with yellow curry sauce which sounds more interesting than it tastes). There are no pools of greasy refried beans, melted cheddar cheese or iceberg lettuce, so if you like that, go to one of the Americanized big chain restaurants.
WONDERFUL!!!!. This place is the most authentic Mexican food I have EVER tasted. The food was wonderful (and smelled wonderful), not the same kind of Mexican food you find at big chains. The entrees are small and do not include rice and bean...everything is al a carte, so you can mix and match. The 12 of us ended up sharing almost everything...there was a lot of "you've got to try this". The atmosphere was very festive. The walls are covered with family photos of Oaxaca, but it maintains a modern feel. Above all it was lots of fun, great tequila and good people! If you are in Ballard you must GO! Reservations only accepted for groups more than 7.
