Editorial Review for Pan-Africa Cafe – by Jill Lightner
The Scene
Bright tiled counters and big windows keep things summery, even on cloudy afternoons, while carved wooden chairs supply a cozy seat for a leisurely lunch break. Thanks to kind service and friends of the owner stopping in, this is the sort of welcoming neighborhood cafe Pike Place Market specializes in, outside of the tourist season.
The Food
Half the menu is Ethiopian; the other half rotates through the other countries at a rate of one per month. Standard dishes from the Ethiopian side include richly flavored red lentils, mild potato and cabbage stew, and thick yellow split peas, which could use a little extra seasoning. When it's Zimbabwe's turn in the rotating roster, try the chicken yaissa, which combines lemons, onions and mustard seed for a tartly succulent feast.

My husband and I have eaten here many times and have been very pleased every time. I am a veggie and he is not. Their menu has a wide variety of dishes to please any palate. The food is different than any other food i have eaten but it was delicious. The service is always good and the prices are amazing. We have a hard time not going there when we venture out of the eastside and into the city. I would highly recommend giving this little cafe a try.
Pros: small cozy cafe
Cons: parking

I brought a group of 17 to eat here by prior arrangement with Hirut. She did an absolutely wonderful job accomodating us: she not only set a big, private table, but served bountiful delicious food and even bought a cake in the market to serve for dessert. I can't thank her enough for her hospitality. I'll certainly be back!
Pros: delicious food and gracious hostess
