Editorial Review for The War Room – by Hannah Levin
The Scene
Previously a nondescript dance club, this ideal Pike Street location has been warmed up with rich pine siding and became a major draw on the Capitol Hill scene in 2005. Mixing elements of class and comfort, the space has much to offer, from low-slung communal couches in the lounge to the perfectly situated dance floor in the main room, a generously sized space with strategically placed booths for views of the action. The cordial staff lives up to their motto that "peace is our profession."
The Draw
Saturday's Yo Son! and Soul City Mondays with Circle of Fire regularly attract crowds. Summer happy hours are also a big attraction, thanks to a large rooftop deck that provides an unexpected oasis in a neighborhood known for higher noise levels. Even on breezy days, shielding bamboo screens make this an idyllic spot for an afternoon margarita or a weekend bloody mary.

I have been going to the War Room on and off for several years and have noticed the quality decline and definitely agree with the reviews below about rude treatment of customers. I was there on Friday night (hip hop night) with a large group for my sister's birthday. The women's restroom line was LONG around midnight. Only one toilet out of two in the women's toilet's was functioning. One of my guy friends was in the men's room and said he would guard the staff if I wanted to use the men's restroom. After using the restroom, I was washing my hands and a "Peace Keeper" (bouncer) saw me. He grabbed my arm and said "You gotta go." I had only had two drinks and was clearly sober and in control. As he grabbed my arm and escorted me out I asked if I had to leave the restroom and all he said was "You gotta go" while pushing me out of the club. When we were outside the club, he announced to the doorman, in front of everyone who was standing outside, that I could not come back in the club. This was humiliating! As the users below, I am not the troublemaking type. I am 27 years old and have NEVER been kicked out of a club, let alone any establishment!! I have been to the War Room several times in the past when the bouncers actually allow women to use the men's room when there are long lines. I would have appreciated being asked not to use the men's restroom if this was against the rules. I sent an email to explain this situation to Marcus at the War Room who put us on the guestlist. He has not responded and I'm very disappointed that they don't see any value in customer service. The War Room has a great layout and the rooftop lounge area is so nice in the summer. It's too bad they seem to be driving away the crowd that likes to have fun and can handle their liquor without getting into fights! They also lost at least $300 in drink sales as our group of about 20 all left after I was so rudely treated and kicked out. I will never return.
Pros: Great layout, patio upstairs is nice, drinks are good
Cons: Service is horrible, bouncers are rude and treat people like criminals

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! The bouncers and security are ridiculous! I had a flashlight in my face more than 12 times throughout the night. I had only one or two drinks so it had nothing to do with my behavior, they were doing it to everyone at the place! At some points, I was just sitting on a couch talking with a girlfriend and I'd get a flashlight shining in my face coming from across the room. They obviously are now going overboard since they've had so much violence there recently. I would never spend a cover to get harassed like that again! Go to Baltic Room or Ballroom to dance, skip this place!
