Editorial Review for Fatty Crab – by Erin Behan
The Scene
In a neighborhood where style often trumps substance, this good-times Malaysian hot spot pleases in both. The small room's open kitchen belches heavy scents of spice, and a tiny bar is the only place to wait for a spot at the wooden tables with notably uncomfortable (but authentic) chairs.
The Food
Dishes are well-paced by sincere indie rockers who can't do enough to content diners, although the food doesn't need assistance. To start, there's sweet-sour green mango sticks, with a dipping bowl generous on chili, plus sugar and salt. But this is a place to get your hands dirty, whether with meaty chicken wings dripping with a slow-burn sauce or the chili Dungeness crab served with toasts to absorb its thick spice bath. If the evening doesn't call for wet-naps, try the pickled watermelon and light-as-air crispy pork salad and the fabulous short ribs infused with the tastes of lime, coconut and chili.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkThis is one place where beer complements the food as well, or better, than wine. Order up an oversized 16-ounce Singha, a 22-ounce Morimoto Black Obi Soba from Rogue, or the hefty 24-ounce Hitachino White.
Know Before You GoThere's precious little space to wait inside the restaurant, so arrive before 8pm to avoid a long line.
The ExtrasChef Zak Pelaccio also helms the kitchen at 5 Ninth, just around the corner.

Just finished a wonderful dinner with superb (yes messy but not to be missed) crab, unbelievably tender short ribs, great shrimps which you wrap in lettuce with lots of accompaniments--actually every dish was good. Service was very friendly, very efficient, didn't rush us at all. We went with kids 6 and 9 who loved the spicy food, paid their compliments to the chef and got a big appreciative smile.

avoid the chili crab. it's a f***ing mess, and it's $40 (M.P. on the menu), which I found shocking considering a menu of $10-16 items.
