All around great. I live in West Seattle and recently recieved a gift card to Blackbird Bistro. I went with a friend for breakfast on the weekend and it was fantastic. The restaurant was warm and lively. The food and service was great. All of the food is really fresh and filling. The menu definately has the breakfast stamples with a few suprises as well. My friend had an awesome bloody mary with pepper vodka that they infuse in the restaurant. We went back later the next week for lunch and had another great experience. I can't wait to try dinner. The server also said that they have a large patio in the summer. Great place!
Bad Brunch. I was very impressed with my first visit to Blackbird. We had wonderful entrees and drinks; and we were already talking about the next time we were going to visit. We went back twice for brunch and had poor service. The first time we had brunch they were out of menu items and the wait staff didn't come back to our table after the food was served. The second time our dishes arrived cold and the entire table agreed that our waiter was rude, and blatantly acted annoyed with our presence. Not sure if this is due to under staffing the restaurant. I would not recommend this restaurant for a relaxing afternoon brunch.
Off & On Organic food. We live in West Seattle & would love to frequent a local organic restaurant. Unfortunately, the food has been off & on & the price is pretty high. It sounds like it's improved since we've last visited so maybe we should try again.
Excited to come back!. I have been to Blackbird a few times now and can't find a thing to b*#!ch about. The food is great and the price allows me to come back again and again. I went with two friends on tuesday night, sat on the patio, and took FULL advantage of thier 1/2 price wine night. If you can find a better wine deal let me know. (seriously email me, and let me know). The server was fun and enthusiastic. I am not cheap but with this kind of food and really good wine priced like this, what's not to like?? The space is relaxing and casual too.
Food needs a lift to match the decor.
Blackbird looks like a trendy foodie place with minimal decor from the outside. It could be so much better with a few slight changes. Our whole table ordered the fresh salmon, which was slightly overcooked and very jostled by the time it arrived. The fish had slid into the greens and was disheveled, causing some of the arugala to be wilted, some fresh. Each plate looked like a different child had assembled it. The portions were small and could have been filled up with the addition of a starch other than the accompanying bland pilaf. (Maybe a polenta cake with a pureed root vegetable would have been better?)
The wine list was pretty good with several varietals available by the glass.
While we wanted dessert, we decided that it would be more overpriced ordinary food and opted for ice cream at home.
Going South?. I was really psyched when first Blackbird opened! A new hip place w/ great food in West Seattle. Unfortunately, the last 3 times I have eaten there have been disappointments (Apr, May & June 2006). Cold crab cakes, overcooked dry chicken that served cold, wilty greens in my salad (seemed like it had been dressed and tossed then refrigerated several hours b/f it was served.)
no socks knocked off here.... Great salads, but the rest of the menu is pretty standard. It's a nice little place for a change of pace. Decent service.
WOW, better than CRUSH in seattle.
Hi everyone, I have to say this is better than CRUSH across town on madison. I have been to crush 3 times over the past 12 months and i've been to Blackbird 2 times over the last month and wow, blackbird is BETTER!!! it 's cheaper too. The wine at Crush is better but quite honestly, the food is better at blackbird with WAYYYY LESS PRETENSE.
Now, for the real disclosure here folks, I live in austin texas and visit seattle about 2 times a year for fun. I eat out at many restaurants and love the pacific northwest foods. This Blackbird is QUITE FABULOUS. I'd go back there before CRUSH, before FLYING FISH, and before many other seattle places. It's really quite good.
The wine list is not as great as other restaurants but they do give you MORE wine for your money and it's not bad wine, just not quite as good as crush or other places. I can handle it and i like wine and know wine.
The food, though, at Blackbird is just fab. NO kidding folks. I'll even write my name to let you know how good I think it is. -lisa koonce
Organic, seasonal ingredients in inventive combinations are the focus at this funky West Seattle bistro..
White mesh curtains reminiscent of mosquito netting divide the big mahogany booths at this cheerful California Avenue restaurant. Inventive light fixtures and pastel walls lend the space a comfortable, living room-esque feel, while the dramatic backlit bar adds some flair. A local family crowd in jeans and fleece vests comes in for the food and the atmosphere--the bistro makes nice night out without seeming stuffy.
With a concentration on local, seasonal and organic, the menu has a lineup of simple yet flavorful dishes. Try the ahi tuna appetizer--medium rare pepper-crusted ahi on a bed of calamari and mushrooms smothered in citrus white wine sauce. Main courses include pan-fried chicken, finished with a sweet honey chili glaze, and the rich, oily grilled ono fish steak served on savory polenta squares. A slice of the not-overly-sweet mascarpone cheesecake finishes the meal.
Delicious food, cool ambience.
We dined at Blackbird and were pleasantly surprised. Great open dining room and bar. It's busy and buzzing, but quiet enough to have a good conversation. The bar felt hip but not over the top, and the overall feel is upscale but welcoming bistro.
I had a fantastic grilled Ono fish served with polenta and squash. The flavors were fantastic, and topped with a garlic beurre sauce and fresh chives. Everything tasted very fresh and flavorful. My husband had the pork chop, which was also good.
Their crab cake appetizer was great- fresh crab and not too greasy or rich, as some restaurants prepare it. Nice aioli on the side and fresh greens for garnish. Service was very friendly and accommodating. The experience was so great we'd consider driving to West Seattle just to eat there!
