Editorial Review for Mixtura--CLOSED – by Anna Roth

The Scene
The main space is wide-open, airy and exudes an air of upscale casual--white tablecloths and black-suited servers compete with parking lot views from the large windows. A mostly local 30-something crowd fills the bar or sits at intimate tables with views of the open kitchen. Shelves of traditional South American pottery are the only interruption to the minimalist decorating scheme; even the food, while gorgeously arranged, arrives on simple white plates.

The Food
The menu focuses on authentic South American ingredients: Andean tubers are stuffed with cheese, fried yucca is a common garnish and nutty quinoa show up encrusted on chicken and baked into rolls. Star tapas plates, called mixturas, include ceviche sparkling with citrus, purple potato cake stuffed with a creamy blend of seafood and, for adventurous eaters, meaty grilled beef heart skewers. For dessert, look no further than the carmelized pineapple and tropical fruit mousse concoction.

We ate just off the appetizers/tapas menu. We ordered 5 appetizers - all of which were recommended by our waiter. This was our first time trying peruvian dishes and it was very delicious! The seafood was very fresh, everything was presented so well! My only negative thought was that all was presented at the same time. I should've asked for it to be served one at a time - no fault to our waiter though. We were very happy with our service and the food!

It was one rainy Sunday night at around 6 PM. There were only a few groups besides us (6 people). I didn't see any manager or owner chef, or any other managimentorial position in the resutaurant. When our waitress brought several tapas dishes to our table, she tipped over a dish with a cocktail glass filled with ceviiche in it. After that it was all horrable story to the very end of our dining experience there. We were all totally disgusted by the way this waitress handled the situation. She not only did not apologize about the mess she created on the table, she just ignored it and left the mess. We then, about 15 minutes later, asked her if she was going to bring new dish or not. Wow, she gave us disgusted look and started acting mean. Entire service was totally inattentive. Among altogether 9 dishes that we tried at the night, there were only two that we thought were good (but not excellent). I could see some intentions by the chef, but the excecution wasn't there. Too bad. They need more refinement and better training of the kitchen staff. I don't know who owns the place, but the managing and maintaining a great restaurant needs a lot more than one good chef and his (her) imagination. There are many upscale, ambitious restaurants that opened in the past few years in greater Seattle area. Unfortunately though, I only see a handfull that are worth visiting.
