Editorial Review for Cremant – by Anna Roth

The Scene
Gray flowered wallpaper matches the wood-imprinted concrete walls of this intimate restaurant, highlighting its flawless meld of casual and fancy. The dining room is separated into two distinct spaces by a tall red bench; tables are elegantly appointed with candles and white tablecloths without making the atmosphere too formal. Patrons tend to be older Francophiles and foodies, but there's a healthy smattering of youngsters eager to try the authentic dishes.

The Food
The menu draws heavily on traditional French fare, including a complex and satisfying onion soup and a decadent chicken liver parfait. Mussels, a popular main course, are cooked with Cremant sparkling wine, cream, parsley and hunks of bacon. Steak tartare is a meaty indulgence of Kobe sirloin hand-chopped with herbs and capers. Desserts feature the usual French favorites, plus the chef's heavenly cognac chocolate--a mix of cognac, chocolate and cream in a small glass.

On a date? Kick the romance up a notch by ordering one of the menu's plates for two--choose between a whole roasted chicken and a 32-ounce rib steak.

Before we went to Cremant, after receiving a gift certificate, we read the reviews here. I was dubious - until I called for a reservation. The gentleman whom I spoke with was charming and friendly. We arrived on a Friday evening, just a bit early, and were prepared to wait for a table. I will say that parking was a trying experience - but then I saw how many cute little restaurants there were on one block. Made more sense. We were immediately seated (by a tall friendly man - if this is the same 'tall surly man' another reviewer spoke of, he must have been having a bad day then) and our server came to greet us and tell us about the specials. She answered our questions knowledgeably, and made excellent suggestions to pair with wines. I work in the wine industry, and I was also impressed with her knowledge of the French wine selection. Throughout the evening, the service she provided was impeccable. The food was delectable, and the portions were quite generous. And dessert, paired with cremant champagne, was mouthwatering. I do believe I actually swooned! Because it was my birthday, my creme brulee was brought with a candle - and a song. A nice touch that made me feel like a 'regular' getting special treatment. The restaurant is a warm, inviting little bistro with a mod vibe that is quite unexpected. I can see why it is a neighborhood favorite with guests of a wide variety of ages. We will definitely be back - driving 'all the way in' from Snohomish County. It's worth it! I've already recommended it to friends in the wine industry. Our 'favorite' places include the Barking Frog, Purple... and now Cremant. Five sparkling stars! (And thank you, Joe & Leslye, for sharing 'your spot' with us!)

Pros: Ambience, music, flattering lighting!, wine list, desserts, service

Cons: parking

The maitre' d needs to lighten up! We had made a reservation months beforehand for Valentine's Day. We show up at 7:00, and a tall guy in suit tells us that we're half an hour late, and he's crossed us off the list. He even shows us the book with our name crossed out! I tell him we believed the reservation was for 7:00, and he said impossible, he booked it himself. Then he claimed to have called us to reconfirm-- a call we had never received. Eventually, after making sure that we understood how put out he was, we eventually got a table. Turned out, there were several empty tables all night long. The ONLY thing that would allow us to return to Cremant is the food, which was excellent. The Coq au Vin, which was a special that day, was superb. The sauce was rich and chock full of flavor, the chicken was form tender. Great food, poor management... what can I say.

Pros: Good classic french fare

Cons: Bad maitre' d
