Editorial Review for Capelli's Gentlemen's Barbershop – by Anna Roth

In Short
The chairs are black leather and the flat-screen TV in the waiting room broadcasts ESPN--this is no frou frou salon. Conveniently located in the downtown business district, the salon caters to the businessmen of Seattle. Along with the TV, an assortment of newspapers, masculine magazines and antique books remake the waiting room into a manly study. Besides cuts, the salon offers scalp massage, beard trimming and 10-minute coloring to camouflage grayness.

User Reviews for Capelli's Gentlemen's Barbershop

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

As a first time customer of Capelli's, I was delighted to find such a place existed. I've always hoped for a barbershop with services, atmosphere and clientèle custom tailored towards a gentlemen with discerning standards in grooming, such as myself. Between the polite service, professional haircut and wash, I truly felt like a guest, rather than just another customer. Excellent business, I handed out a handful of Capelli's business cards to colleagues and friends of mine who are also tasteful and equally discerning gentlemen such as myself.

Pros: Professional staff of classy ladies

Cons: Not enough hair to justify staying longer

I have extremely short hair, and I am a woman. I work in the same building as Capelli's downtown location so I thought I could stop in for a trim around the neck. Yes, this shop advertises itself as a Gentlemen's Barbershop, but it does not say that it is EXCLUSIVE to men. They would not cut my hair. I went back and forth for a while with the receptionist, who wouldn't say directly, "no, we don't cut women's hair", but would not allow me to see a stylist either. She kept saying that "we only have equipment that is designed especially for the texture of men's hair, so we are unable to cut your hair." I said that I had NEVER heard of such a thing. You just need a sharp pair of scissors and a comb to cut hair (any hair) man or women. I WAS REFUSED SERVICE BASED ONLY ON MY GENDER!

I emailed the owner of the company to relay how insulted I was at the lack of tack by, and outright patronization received from the receptionist and she replied such: "...we advertise that we are a gentleman’s shop and we advertise that we cater to the "manliest of men", therefore I should have been clear that they mainly cut men’s hair. Part of her reply reads: "Since opening Capelli's four years ago we feel our image has portrayed us correctly since we have not had any women clientele". She he did not apologize to me for being turned away due to my gender only stated she was sorry I felt that I was.

I believe that they should post notice to the effect that they do not want/allow women in their shop. I also believe it would be more professional to have staff say directly, "No, we do not allow women". It may not happen that women come to their shop often for service, but making up lies "we only have equipment to cut the texture of men’s hair" is just plain insulting and frankly, makes the shop and staff untrustworthy. Should I mention that this entire event was carried out in front of (men) customers. I was humiliated. DO NOT USE THIS BARBERSHOP!

Cons: They REFUSE to cut a woman's hair- even if it is shorter than a man's regular cut!
