What Our Expert Scouts Say

April 27, 2013

This luxe downtown room serves up Northern Italian fare including house made pastas, antipastas and grilled meats. Don't miss the grilled caesar, leg of lamb ragu, Barolo hangar steak or Trinidad cane mojito.

The daily happy hour 3:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. and and 10:00 p.m. - close is a great value. Think 50% off the entire bar menu and $14 bottles of wine.

Outdoor seating is a plus.

Excellent food, beautiful dining room and bar, perfect service. Very unique in style; somewhat east-coastish. Barolo is a wonderful restaurant. The food is flavorful and well presented and the service is friendly, not sloppy, not snobbish, just right. Check out the bar for cocktails and apps or the dining room for a really good dinner.

Great food and happy hour prices! Lousy bar staff!. Wow! Amazing happy hour prices! A buffalo burger, calamari, and two glasses of wine for around 20 dollars! The music is beautiful and the dining room is equally entertaining with the candle light, beautiful people and ornate chandaliers. The torteloni cannot be missed. The wine list is very well balanced with a nice assortment of familiar Italian varietals and a well balanced selection of domestic offerings. However, there is a major lack of attentiveness at the bar. The young woman behind the bar was very aloof and made us feel like we should maybe go some place else. The consistency of our drinks was very questionable considering 3 cosmos all tasted very different from each others. All in all, Barolo is a great experience just make sure to skip the bar by all means unless it's happy hour!

Excellent Food with Mismatched Atmosphere. Our group tried two apps, two different salads, and four different entrees. Everthing was excellent. You'd really have to be a nit picking foodie to find many flaws. Service was slow to start but fine for the rest of the meal. With the longer days now, I suppose the restaurant doesn't get that more, low-light romantic atmosphere until dark. What we wondered though, in a place serving many traditional Italian dishes, what's with the loud sheik/fast paced/night club background music? I would have expected some traditional Italian tunes playing in the background or something more of a classical nature. However when you look around and realize this is sort of an 'in place' for the younger (20's, early 30's crowd - saw several 20-somethings all made up with their Sugar Daddys - this place has a lot of 'lookers' including some of the staff) you realize they are trying to cater to the foodie (of all ages) and the younger crowd looking for a place to impress a date before going clubbing I suppose. I'm late 30's and would have prefered Frank Sinatra singing 'That's Amore' in the background instead of the techno'ish beats. Seemed like a mismatch to me. It would be perfect if they could acoustically separate the bar setting music from the dining area and go for more slow-paced relaxed music in the dining area. I'd give it five stars, but the music just didn't match the cuisine and general ambiance in my opinion and the wait staff seemed to be a tad overwhelmed. A strong 4+ star rating.

Great Atmosphere. Amazing dessert!! Best Tiramisu I have ever had, and I'm Italian so that speaks for itself! Most of the food is wonderful, I have been there twice, the first dish I had was a little too al dente for my liking but the flavors were great. The second time around the pasta was perfect.

Great food, hard to see!. My husband and I went to Barolo for a quick dinner and sat in the bar area. The food and service was great, however, the lighting mad it hard to see the menu and the food that was served. The only lighting by our table was a small tea-light candle. There was even another couple that had to pull out a flashlight to see the menu. Although the lighting (or lack thereof) helps with the ambiance, it needs to be functional! Thank goodness for the outside street light, or I wouldn't have been able to order! The gnocci was great, as was the tortelloni. I would definitely go back. As a side note, not somewhere I would take children.

Sleek, modern design meets rustic Northern Italian cuisine at this upscale downtown restaurant.. The Scene
Its stone's-throw proximity to several major downtown hotels and minimally chic, alabaster-and-eggshell aesthetic attract a well-heeled business crowd and sprinkling of youthful, amorous couples. While waiting for a spot at one of the long, communal tables or a more private, smaller table, diners gather around the dramatically lit, white marble bar, sipping signature cocktails and nibbling on artisan bread served with dark dollops of olive tapanade.

The Food
The approach the kitchen takes with the Northern Italian menu is significantly different from that of its more homestyle sister restaurant on Roosevelt, Mamma Melina. Skip the serviceable, but uninspired baked escargot in favor of silken beef carpaccio, elevated with the elegant touch of a black truffle mélange. Classic, meaty dishes like the osso bucco benefit from seductive sides such as saffron risotto, but pale next to the fresh-yet-earthy pasta selections, especially the organic lamb ragu served with a liberal sprinkling of fresh herbs.

Must experience Barolo if you know a special place when you see one. The vigor, the excellent food and service, the superb happy hour and the glamorous atmosphere makes Barolo home for the beautiful, sophisticated eaters and fine wine lovers. On two occasion we seated by celebrities, nice plus! What's really cool about it is that the service is NOT pompous and rather friendly. Great music selection.

Not as good as all the Hype. After reading the reviews and recommendations from friends our party of 4 was really excited to try Barolo and were sorely disappointed, to start the music was too loud and seemed to get louder as the evening went on which made conversation challenging, we ordered the Tuna Tartare and we could tell by the flavor and smell it was way below Sashimi Grade Tuna, the Clams and Mussells were in a very good broth but a large number were cracked or never opened and we weren't comfortable eating them not knowing if they were even alive when they steamed them, my Beefsteak Tomato Salad had so much vinegar in the vinagerette thats all I could taste the rest of the evening, the Ravioli special would have been good had they not served it to me at room temperature, the Tiramisu was very good but after such a disappointing meal it just wasn't enough, would never recommend it or return
