Editorial Review for Shun Japanese Cuisine – by Anna Roth

The Scene
Though the building was once a fast food joint, you wouldn't know it now: the boxiness of the room is well hidden with lots of sleek Asian-influenced elements and neutral earth tones, with a small sushi bar discretely tucked in the corner. The crowd is a mixed bag: Families from View Ridge and Laurelhurst; students lugging textbooks and studying over sushi; Japanese natives; young couples out on dates.

The Food
The menu is full of well-executed Japanese classics. Tofu agedashi makes a nice appetizer and maintains a nice crisp even in the broth; the miso soup is a highly competent take on the item many menus take for granted. Black cod kasuzuke and miso-marinated salmon are good alternatives to sushi for any raw fish-phobes in a party. The sashimi is all-around stellar, melt-in-your-mouth fresh and delicious.

When you first walk into Shun, the first thing you'll notice is the friendly smiles and greetings from both the wait staff and the sushi chefs. Seating is very prompt and the tables are very clean. With the colors and lighting, the atmosphere is very comfortable and welcoming. Although it wasn't rated romantic by the so called "critics", we've found it to be perfect for a date. There is a candle lit on each table and the wait staff does an excellent job of "remaining in the background". The variety of sushi available is great and the taste is fantastic! If there's something not on the menu, the chefs are happy to accommodate when possible. And if you're sitting at the sushi bar and don't quite know what you want, again the chefs are more than pleased to present options based upon your likes and dislikes-- they know best. On many occasions, the chefs will make something special for you given flexibility for them to remain creative. Just as you don't read a book by it's cover, don't judge Shun by the critics. Go try it for yourself!

Pros: Parking, Ambience, Service, Food, Menu

Cons: Not suitable for large groups

When I pulled into the parking lot, somehow I felt we were going to be pleased with Shun. The menu outside indicated we wouldn't have to take out a second mortgage to pay the bill...like so many other sushi houses in Seattle. The dining area is roomy--not overly compacted. Decor falls into modern appointments that aren't over-done or gaudy. Immediately, my family and I were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated at a table located on a piece of floor real estate that gave us ample breathing room from the next party. The menu was ecletic enough to please any appetite for authentic Japanese fare. Sushi sets appeared larger in the picture on the menu than what arrived... in less than eight minutes. Wow! An improvement from Shun's autumn reviews. Still, the quality of the fish and veggies satisfied both appetite and expectations. Kids loved the Seattle roll. While my wife and kids endulged themselves...repeatedly referring to the menu for delectible add-ons, the tab was surprisely palatable for the average family's dine-out budget. Reasonable prices and delightful environment. Thumbs up for friendly waitstaff and jovial chefs who worked efficiently from their corner under the Chinese character denoting "Shun" as the best of the fresh harvest. This place is a comer...not yet established as a power house such as Toyoda. Yet it beats the limited fare and bloated pricing you're likely to find at other upscale competitors in Seattle.

Pros: Ambience, friendly, parking, food
