Editorial Review for Back Forty – by Michele Hughes
The Scene
This multiroom East Villager courts nabe dwellers in their late-20s and early-30s, but it's nonimposing enough to draw in their parents, too. Earthy details abound, including lots of wood, mounted farm tools and a subtle landscape behind the bar, while the softly lit white walls and tall windows lend the space a crisp, elevated quality.
The Food
Chef Peter Hoffman (Savoy) works with locally sourced ingredients while drawing on eclectic regional American traditions. The elements largely hold together--chili sauce cuts nicely though the grease of the shrimp and bacon beignets--although a few details feel superfluous, like the sparse dried cherries in an otherwise savory side of Brussels sprouts. Simple offerings such as the uncommonly vibrant grass-fed burger, rich cauliflower gratin and roast chicken with a delectably spiced skin achieve the most harmony. The spare dessert selection is brightened by seasonal fruit pies made by Hoffman's wife, co-owner Susan Rosenfeld, who also designed the interior.
Hits: While the entrees are decidedly meat-focused, the strong variety of sides offers plenty to keep vegetarians happy.
Misses: Only two wines (house red and white) are regularly available by the glass.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkThe stout ice cream float ($7) is best appreciated as a novel beer rather than a sweet treat.
Know Before You GoMain dishes are moderately priced, but the sides must be ordered separately, taking the bill up a notch.
When to GoIt's currently only open for dinner on weekdays (no reservations taken), and Sunday brunch offers specialties like fried chicken and waffles, steak and eggs, and a bagel with house-smoked trout.

I had such a great time there. The food was very good and unpretencious. I really enjoyed the trout. It has to be the best fish I have ever eaten. I am hoping to go to brunch soon.

Very nice place. Food was locally grown and the place had a feeling of a neighbour's kitchen serving friends. Great for a nice quiet casual dining experience
