Incredibly bland Mexican food... even for Seattle.
The UVillage has so many consistently good restaurants- I have no idea why someone would waste their time at Sonrisa. The salsa that comes with the chips tastes bland and artificial. I had chicken and shrimp tacos and while the shrimp was cooked nicely, the tacos had absolutely no flavor. I know Seattle isn't a mecca for great Mexican (except for the Saint and La Carta) but come on- even I could make more authentic Mexican food than this.
The outdoor seating is nice and the service is quick but save your money for a treat from Fran's chocolates or something else in the UVillage that may be worth it!
Good spin on traditional mexican food!. I had been to Sonrisa a couple times before, but mostly for happy hour and taco Tuesdays, a $2 taco night. I went with a friend for a Sunday lunch and it was a great experience. I loved the menu items, it was a modern spin on the traditional Mexican food. I ordered the stacked enchiladas which were delicious! The stacked tortillas with different layers of meat, rice, and beans, made for an interesting spin on classic Mexican favorite. The chips and salsa were alright, I thought the chips were a little greasy but that salsa tasted really fresh and had a good spice to it. We also had margaritas and those were great! The service was good, we sat at the bar and even with a few other tables and having to make drinks, the bar tender was very attentive to our table and made the experience pretty enjoyable. Overall, the experience was really good, I recommend going, especially on taco Tuesdays!
Excellent tacos. We had a late Saturday lunch at Sonrisa, seated in the bar area. The staff was attentive and enthusiastic, and the menu had great selections for that time of the day. We both enjoyed our tacos, and look forward to returning on a weekday evening we can experience more of the menu.
"Modern Mex": Trying to make horrible food look purposeful..
I had meat for the first time since becoming a vegetarian at Sonrisa. Not on purpose, however. I special-ordered a vegetarian burrito because the menu is so vegetarian-unfriendly, and although the first few bites of the incredibly odd tasting meal were fine, I noticed halfway through that there were pieces of steak in the burrito. The restaurant is so poorly lit that I didn't notice until after I had already had a piece without being able to see it. Our server was surprised when I told her, and promptly disappeared for twenty minutes before returning to our table. Thankfully, they did not charge me for my few bites, so it is definite that I will never spend money at this restaurant.
Terrible food, terrible service, terrible restaurant.
Not very vegetarian friendly. Watch out, vegetarians - this "modern mex" establishment puts meat in their black beans and does not list it in the menu - and they are most unapologetic when you complain.
Best tuesdays in town!. Form the first step through the double doors, to the elegant columns of fire and the fine bronze bar top impressive enough for a high end business dinner yet casual enough for a collage date. Sonrisa had a wonderful inviting atmosphere to it. The food was wonderful showing a fine twist on many traditional Mexican dishes, a great selection and very pleasing portions. The staff was very friendly and informative of local attractions, shopping and upcoming events. We were also informed of a new ?Taco Tuesday? in witch the following week we tried . Unsurprisingly it was just as, if not more pleasurable then our first time, with the most incredible little carne? and chicken tacos for two dollars! And a refreshing margarita for three dollars. (cant beat it)

Located in University Village, the contemporary Mexican restaurant owned by The Ram proprietors offers patrons bold and spicy options in this busy shopping destination. Flavorful offerings that use fresh local ingredients include seviche, gazpacho, baked chile relleno, ancho-rubbed chicken quesadilla, mahi mahi tacos and slow-roasted adobo ribs. More-traditional fare for kids and the less adventurous is available as well. The bar, well-stocked with various tequilas, airs different sports year-round on its flat-screen TVs, especially Husky games during the season.
Hits: Specialties include fresh fish of the day prepared accordingly.
Misses: With families dining with small children, loud music in the background and televisions in the lounge, the multi-sensory environment may be distracting for those looking for a quiet place to eat.
An upscale Agua Verde, without the wait!.
From the fresh margaritas and the house beer to the spicy salsa and chips, our dinner was off to a great start. While the menu is definitely meat and fish centric, our waitress, Alyson, suggested fabulus vegetarian variations of much of the menu! Presented in a fun asian style, the food was FANTASTIC! We tried a vegetarian version of the Carne Asada Tacos with asperagus, cilantro, onions, pico de gallo and cotija cheese and the Mahi Mahi Tacos.
The service was also great and the patio seating is a must on a nice night. Plenty of room in the nicely designed bar area as well.
The best part is we walked in without a reservation on a Saturday night and sat right down on the patio. I can't imagine it will be like that for too long! You better hurry!
Great Happy Hour!!. Stopped into the new mexican restaurant in the University Village the other afternoon for a drink and I was extremely impressed. They have one of the best margaritas in town (fresh sour mix and high end tequila) for only $4. I didn't have time to eat so I can't comment on the food but what I saw looked really good and they did have happy hour specials for food too. I will have to go back to test out the menu. The only knock I would say is that the happy hour ends at 5:30 so you got to get there early but I guess it does start up at 10:00 again so it would be a great place to go for a late night cocktail. I definitely recommend trying it out though.
Tuesdays are for taco's!. My wife and I were shopping in the University Village near our home when we found Sonrisa. As we arrived we were asked if we we would like to sit in the dinning room or in the bar where they were offering a happy hour with dollar tacos. We decided to do the bar and try the tacos and I was in need of a marg. (which was very tasty). We ended up getting several orders of the tacos, some with beef and some with chicken. The portions were just right for the cost and delicious. We also tried the Spring Rolls which were different but excellent (especially the dipping sauce). We will be in again next Tuesday night and other nights in the future.
