Brunch - the worse ever experience!.
My best suggestion - Do not go there hungry! or else you may pass out before you get any food - or even seated !
We made reservation over the phone - no proble, maybe 15-20 min wait ! After arriving and waiting over 45 minutes and noticing people have finished eating, who got on the wait list AFTER us, I questioned the seating host. he informed me that party of 3 is difficult to seat, because no tables with 3 chairs available - only 2 or 4. ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME?? suggestion, take one chair away from four and you got 3 - or - add one to a table for 2 ! After waiting one hour and thirty minutes ( remember, we made reservation over the phone) we got seated way in the back by the bar, next to the bathroom..do you think i will ever go back ????
Citysearch Editorial Review. With three spacious locations, Portage Bay Café is a Seattle institution for breakfast, with long lines snaking out their doors on any given day. The big draw? A trip to their famous “toppings bar” which features wonderfully fresh chunks of fruit, berries, organic maple syrup and nuts—all yours for the heaping with any order of pancakes or French toast. (Celiacs rejoice—there are also two gluten-free pancake options on the menu!) Portage Bay Café bills itself as a sustainable breakfast/lunch option, with organic eggs, bread and potatoes being used on the hot sides. Also on the menu: a veritable smorgasbord of various omelets, Eggs Benny, scrambles and hashes, all dished up in gut-busting portions. The South Lake Union location is the largest, with seats for up to 125 hungry patrons, high ceilings and wrap-around windows. Ballard and Roosevelt locations are smaller, with seating for around 40-50, and a slightly more casual feel. With a menu this diverse, you can bet their loyal patrons run the gamut for young families to hungover hipsters still sporting last night’s guyliner, and everyone in between.

"Eat Like You Give a Damn" - local, sustainable, delicious.. If you consider yourself a locavore, you've got to give Portage Bay a try. Their motto, "Eat like you give a damn," pretty much says it all. They menu focuses on organic, local, sustainable, seasonal foods. All your breakfast favorites can be found alongside more innovative cuisine like root vegetable hash or smoked salmon omelettes. Pancakes, french toast and waffles come with a trip to their toppings bar - fruits, nuts, syrups and whipped cream, etc. Breakfast runs around $10 - $12 and is served all day. The lunch menu consists of a selection of tasty hot and cold sandwiches and an array of creative entree salads. Enjoy a glass of cold local beer ($3.50) or wine ($5-$7) with your lunch - or breakfast if that's how you roll.
Worth the wait. I looked up The Portage Bay Cafe on citysearch expecting to see a lot of rave reviews and I was shocked, SHOCKED! to see it pulling in only one. The first reviewer makes this place sound awful, but you need to put this awesome place in context. Firstly, the food at Portage Bay is really really good. Like truly delicious. Lots of fresh fruit and berries for the pancake and grain side of the menu, and high quality organic meats and eggs for us carnivores. Because the food is so darn good, there is a line out the door and waiting for a table can stretch for over an hour at peak weekend times. I do NOT recommend taking a group larger than 5-6. Taking 13 people to an insanely busy and small sized dining establishment is a little ridiculous - they must have lost a lot of table time (and money) gathering space for such a large party (not that that excuses their snippiness!). The fabulous food, generous portion sizes, and overflowing fruit/berry bar more than makes up for the general atmosphere of rushing and bustle and inevitible waiting.

Mistakenly made the reservation for 12 people (rather then 13). Though we had a reservation, we still had to wait over 30 minutes for a table.. which we had no problem with being that we were talking among ourselves :) When we finally got seated I indicated that I mistakenly made the reservation for 12, but there were 13 of us and asked if one more chair could be added to our table. The manager rudely indicated that he could not get another chair for us and that there was no room .. I informed him very nicely that we did not mind squeezing in another chair at the table. He smiled at me (big grin) and told me that I would have to sit on my friends lap and walked away.
I couldn't believe how he acted, being how fixable the situation was (we grabbed a chair that was not being used and added it to the table ourselves). I can see Portage Bay Cafe loosing a lot of business based off of how this manager treats your customers. He seemed very stressed out and rude to others as well. I would not be surprised if you receive other complaints.
